What is the method of wiping over the sandals and what are the conditions?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner: Peace be upon you.

The Shaykh: And upon you peace.

The questioner : How is our Shaykh doing?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, I am well.

The questioner : And by Allah, O our Shaykh, regarding a small question,

The Shaykh: Go ahead.

The questioner : It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that it is permissible to wipe over the sandals. What is the method of wiping and what are the conditions?

The Shaykh : The conditions are the same as those pertaining to wiping over leather socks: one must not wipe for more than a day and a night if he is a resident, and one must not wipe for more than three days and their nights if he is a traveler. And as soon as one begins the wiping, the time period starts there. So until the equivalent of twenty-four hours has passed, the time period has ended. As for the form of the wiping, it does not have a specific method. It is a linguistic realization, meaning it is wiping over the leather socks or wiping over the sandals with one finger, two fingers, three, four, or five; it is not important. What is important is that the wiping takes place over the sandals or over the leather socks or over the socks, just like that.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good, our Shaykh.

The Shaykh : And beware of that.

The questioner: Peace be upon you.

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah.

Another questioner : It means the difference between that question, meaning ... it is permissible.

The Shaykh : What is permissible?

The questioner : The first scenario.

The Shaykh : There is no permissibility; the first form is a forward sale (salam).

The questioner : Very good. What is the difference between the two forms, regardless of what you ruled or what you answered?

The Shaykh : The difference is that there is a sale and a purchase there.

The questioner : They fixed the price.

The Shaykh : Yes, they fixed the price.
