What is the ruling on a woman cutting her hair in order to beautify herself for her husband, and what is the limit of the cut? In other words, what is the permissible amount for cutting a woman's hair?

The questioner : This is a questioner for the program who sent a set of questions, saying: What is the ruling on a woman cutting her hair in order to beautify herself for her husband, and what is the limit of the cut? In other words, what is the permissible amount for cutting a woman's hair?

The Shaykh : Cutting a woman's hair, I mean cutting the hair on her head.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Some scholars disliked it, some scholars forbade it, and some scholars permitted it. Since there is disagreement on the matter, we return to the Book and the Sunnah. I do not know, up to this moment, anything that indicates the prohibition of a woman cutting the hair on her head. Therefore, the original ruling is permissibility, and custom should be followed in this matter. In the past, women desired long hair and took pride in its length, and they did not cut it except for a legal or physical necessity. Circumstances have changed, so the opinion that it is forbidden is weak and has no basis. The opinion that it is disliked requires reflection and consideration. The opinion that it is permissible is closer to the rules and principles. Muslim narrated in his Sahih that the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), after his death, used to cut their heads until they were like a tuft of hair. However, if a woman cuts it so severely that it becomes like a man's head, this is forbidden without doubt, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family)
cursed women who imitate men لعن المتشبّهات من النساء بالرجال
Sunan Abi Dawud 4097Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
Likewise, if she cuts it in a way that resembles the heads of disbelieving women and prostitutes, then whoever imitates a people is one of them.
As for if she cuts it lightly, so that it does not reach the level of resembling men's hair, and it does not resemble the heads of prostitutes and disbelieving women, then there is nothing wrong with it.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh, and may Allah bless you and your knowledge, and benefit the Muslims through you.
O dear brothers and listeners, His Eminence Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen, professor at the College of Sharia and Principles of Religion in al-Qasim, and preacher and imam of the Grand Mosque in the city of Unaizah, has answered your questions.
May Allah reward him for his eminence, and thank you all. In conclusion, please accept the greetings of my colleague, the sound engineer Sa'd Abd al-Aziz Khumays. And may peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
