Continuation of the discussion on plural marriage.

The Shaykh : I do not advise marrying for the reason we mentioned earlier. That is, I fear—what I fear most is that this person who marries for this purpose alone, for no other reason related to his person that only the Knower of the Unseen knows—I fear that the common proverb will apply to him, which says: "His likeness is like that of one who builds a palace and demolishes a city." Why? Because he wants to realize the principle of a recommended, desirable marriage that is prescribed by the Shari'ah. And I am among those who say that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Marry those who are fertile and loving, for I will be shown your numbers to the nations on the Day of Resurrection. تزوجوا الولود الودود فإني مباه بكم الأمم يوم القيامة
, that a person who marries with the intention of increasing the Ummah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), this is a noble and very great intention, let alone if it is accompanied by other intentions that he knows and no one else ever knows. But I say: he must look carefully at the matter, and open both his eyes to the fact that he is realizing a recommended practice, and what follows from it is what? Neglecting an obligatory duty. Because among the Islamic principles is that if a Muslim falls between two evils, he should choose the lesser of them. But it is not among the Islamic principles that one should plunge himself into an evil in order to realize or hold fast to a recommended matter like this. So he must decide on this fact: the second, third, and fourth marriage is a prescribed matter by the explicit text of the Qur'an and the Sunnah, and the practice of the righteous Salaf proceeded on that basis, so many of them had more than one wife. But times differ, as we indicated earlier, and this ruling is like the other thing mentioned, for the first matter is connected to the second, or the second to the first, by the commonality of sharing the operative cause, which is the corruption of society.
