Is the original principle in marriage plural marriage?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Praise be to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah.
Some people ask, or the issue is raised now, regarding the topic of plural marriage: that the original principle in marriage is plural marriage. What is your opinion, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh : What I believe and testify to Allah is that the original principle in marriage is indeed plural marriage, for two reasons:
The first reason is that it is more chaste for the one who practices it, and more pious for his own self.
The other reason is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as he said:
Marry the loving and the fertile; for I shall boast with you before the nations on the Day of Resurrection. تزوَّجوا الودود الولود ؛ فإني مباهٍ بكم الأمم يوم القيامة
, indicated the reason or the legal cause for which he (peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged men to choose a wife who is fertile.
So the reason for this encouragement is that a fertile woman is a cause for increasing the community of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and consequently, this fulfills his desire (peace and blessings be upon him) to boast to his brothers among the prophets on the Day of Resurrection. It is self-evident, to the extent that it does not need explanation, that if a man limits himself to one wife, he only fulfills part of the desire, and if he increases and marries a second, he has increased in fulfilling the Prophetic desire, and so on until the matter reaches the limit of the number specified in the Qur'an and the Sunnah;
then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four فانكحوا ما طاب لكم من النساء مثنى وثلاث ورباع
[An-Nisa 4:3]
. As for the Sunnah, it is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that a man embraced Islam and had nine women under his roof, so he said to him (peace and blessings be upon him):
Keep four of them and divorce the rest. أمسِكْ منهنَّ أربعًا وطلِّق سائرهنَّ
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 10:1398
. If the noble divine command encourages Muslims to marry two, three, or four, as I indicated earlier, this fulfills the desire of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in his boasting with his community on the Day of Resurrection more and more than if the Muslim limited himself to one. With the observation that many husbands seek to marry a loving wife, but also a fertile one, but it does not become clear to them after marriage that this wife truly qualifies as fertile, meaning one who bears many children. In that case, he has only fulfilled a very small portion of the desire of the noble Prophet (may the best of prayers and the most perfect of peace be upon him). It is very clear that the more he marries women, the more numerous his offspring will be, and consequently, the community of the Messenger (peace be upon him) will be the most numerous of nations on the Day of Resurrection.
But it is necessary to observe a very important matter for the one who wants to marry a second, third, or fourth wife: that he must achieve justice between them. Justice between them relates to a matter that is made easy and smoothed out for the one who wants to fear Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and that is limited to the home in terms of residence, food, drink, and clothing. As for what relates to the internal, heart-related matter, the Muslim is not burdened with being just between women in heart-love, and this is a matter that does not fall within the capacity and ability of a human being. And He (the Exalted) said:
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity لا يكلف الله نفسًا إلا وسعها
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
