Reciting Surat al-Masad in Prayer

Question: We have heard that it is not permissible to recite Surat al-Masad in prayer. Is this correct? And why?

Answer: This is not correct. Rather, it is permissible to recite Surat al-Masad in prayer and elsewhere, as it is a surah of the Qur'an.And Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:
So recite what is easy from itفَاقْرَءُوا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنْهُ
[Al-Muzzammil: 20], and no specific limit of the Qur'an was designated to be recited in prayer. Rather, the entire Qur'an is recited in prayer, including Surat al-Masad and others.

Answer: It is obligatory for the ma'mum, if the imam is reciting aloud, to listen attentively;because of His saying, the Exalted:
So when the Qur'an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy.وَإِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُوا لَهُ وَأَنْصِتُوا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ
[Al-A'raf: 204].
Therefore, it is not permissible for the ma'mum to recite when his imam is reciting aloud, except for al-Fatihah, according to the opinion of some scholars.
As for anything other than al-Fatihah, he does not recite anything from the Qur'an, but rather listens to the imam's recitation. However, if the imam becomes confused in his recitation, it is prescribed for the ma'mum to help the imam, provided he knows the verse that became difficult for the imam. As for taking the mushaf and reading behind the imam to help him if he makes a mistake, this is not permissible. But if, for example, something becomes difficult for the imam and the ma'mum knows the verse that was unclear to him, he should alert him to it. If he does not know it, he is excused. As for taking the mushaf and reading behind the imam, this has no basis, except for Surat al-Fatihah, as we mentioned, where there is disagreement among the scholars.
