The questioner : What is the method for purifying clothes that have been affected by impurity? If we put them in the same washing machine with the other clothes, will they become impure?

The Shaykh : First, if some of the clothes have visible, tangible impurity, this impurity itself is purified with water outside the washing machine, and then it is thrown in with the other clothes that are not impure but are dirty; there is no harm in this case. As for throwing in the clothes with the tangible impurity still on them, along with the other clothes that are not impure, this requires more effort regarding the washing machine until it is most likely that this impurity, which was on some of the clothes, dissolved in the water in the washing machine and made that water impure, thereby affecting all the clothes. In that case, these clothes must be washed a second and third time until they come out clean and pure. So, the first method is the safest way to ensure that all the clothes come out ritually pure according to the Shari'ah. The other method is permissible, but it may require more cycles; for example, instead of running the washing machine two or three times, you might have to run it four times. The important thing is that the impurity of the clothes is removed or purified by the removal of the tangible impurity. If the cloth that was impure with tangible impurity is thrown in with another cloth that is not impure but is dirty, and in the end, both cloths come out of the washing machine with the same level of cleanliness, then the originally impure cloth has become pure. Is that clear?

The questioner: Yes.
