The questioner : Another question: What is established and the stronger position regarding the disputed matter concerning the Messenger seeing the Essence of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He)?
The Shaykh : Ah, there is no authentic hadith traced to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in which he said, "I saw my Lord on the night I was taken up." No such hadith is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: This is outside the scope of the discussion. Rather, there is a hadith in Sahih Muslim and an authentic report from the Lady Aisha that denies this. Imam Muslim narrated in his Sahih from the hadith of Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you see your Lord?" He said: And in the hadith of Abu Musa, which Muslim listed after that hadith, he said: So if you combine this with that, you reach the conclusion that he did not see this traced hadith. As for the mawquf hadith, it contains a definitive statement from the Mother of the Believers, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), the truthful daughter of the truthful one, who is among the most knowledgeable people regarding the personality of the Messenger and what concerns his Isra and Mi'raj. It is narrated in the two Sahihs, in al-Bukhari and Muslim, through the noble Tabi'i known as Misraq, that he came to Aisha and said, "O Mother of the Believers, did Muhammad see his Lord?" This is his question, and listen to the answer; I am not the one saying it, I am merely a transmitter. Did Muhammad see his Lord? She said, "My hair stood on end at what you said." He said, "O Mother of the Believers, have mercy on me and do not rush me. Did not Allah (Mighty and Majestic) say: [An-Najm 53:13]?" She said, "I am the most knowledgeable of people about that. I saw the Messenger of Allah. She said, "I am the most knowledgeable of people about that. I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: " So this is the interpretation of the verse. Then she said, following the instruction of the Ummah, may Allah reward her for the Ummah with good: "Three things: whoever tells you them has committed a great lie against Allah." Then she recited the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He): [Ash-Shuraa 42:51] So it is not possible to converse with Allah except from behind a veil in this worldly life. And therefore, the seeing of Allah in the Hereafter differs from the seeing here in this world. This is the first issue. She said, "And whoever tells you that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) knew what is in tomorrow has committed a great lie against Allah." Then she recited His saying (Blessed and Exalted is He): [An-Naml 27:65] The third and last: "And whoever tells you that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) concealed something he was commanded to convey has committed a great lie against Allah." Then she recited His saying (Mighty and Majestic): [Al-Ma'idah 5:67] In a narration unique to Muslim, and not in his counterpart al-Bukhari, she said: "If Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had concealed something he was commanded to convey, he would have concealed the saying of his Lord: [Al-Ahzab 33:37]" But he did not conceal it, because this is his obligatory duty, the message: [Al-Ma'idah 5:67] to the end of the verse, unlike others.
The Shaykh : Ah, there is no authentic hadith traced to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in which he said, "I saw my Lord on the night I was taken up." No such hadith is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
I saw my Lord in a dream
Light, how can I see it?
His veil is light.
And he certainly saw him in another descent
I saw Jibril in the form in which he was created, twice, and he had six hundred wings, and he filled the horizon
And it is not for any human being that Allah should speak to him except by revelation or from behind a partition or that He sends a messenger
Say, "None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah
O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people
And [remember, O Muhammad], when you said to the one on whom Allah bestowed favor and you bestowed favor, "Keep your wife and fear Allah," while you concealed within yourself that which Allah is to disclose. And you feared the people, while Allah has more right that you fear Him.
O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord
