The Definition of Intercession Linguistically and in the Shari'ah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Intercession is derived from the word *shaf'* (pairing), and *shaf'* is the opposite of *witr* (odd). Allah the Exalted said:
and the even and the odd والشفع والوتر
Since it is the opposite of odd, its meaning is that it consists of two things. Thus, intercession is the joining of the intercessor to the one for whom intercession is sought. Its definition is: mediating on behalf of another to bring about a benefit or to ward off a harm. This intercession is mediating on behalf of another to bring about a benefit or to ward off a harm. So the intercession of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for those who are in the Fire to be taken out of it—this is intercession in what? In warding off a harm. And his intercession for the people of Paradise to enter Paradise—this is intercession in bringing about a benefit.
