The Shaykh : This is because their enmity is more severe, harsher, and more painful, for they [Al-Baqarah 2:14] The hypocrite meets you, preceding you with the most eloquent of tongues, speaking sweet and gentle words, so you say, "This is my support and my ally." But when he turns his back on you, he is your enemy. When he meets you, he stands and speaks about Islam and the Muslim community, and about what is obligatory for the Muslim and what is obligatory for the believer, so you say, "This man is truly a believer." But when he goes to his companions and associates, he says, "We mock these simpletons; we play with their minds. We are only mocking." The hypocrite is distinguished from the believer by what has become apparent from the hypocrites in the words and writings that have revealed their state. The believer is the same in his outward appearance and his inner self, whereas the hypocrite’s outward appearance is pleasing, but his inner self is tormenting, the opposite of his outward appearance. For this reason, one of the signs of the hypocrite, as described by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), is that when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks his promise; and when he is trusted, he betrays. When he speaks, he lies, so his inner self is the opposite of his outward appearance. When he promises, he breaks his promise, so his inner self is the opposite of his outward appearance. When he is trusted, he betrays, so his inner self is the opposite of his outward appearance. And so the hypocrite is always such that his inner self is the opposite of his outward appearance.
