The Shaykh : Hypocrisy became prominent during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) after the Battle of Badr, when the leaders of Quraysh were killed at Badr and the Muslims gained the upper hand. Hypocrisy appeared, and these hypocrites displayed themselves as Muslims while they were actually disbelievers.
And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe"; but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say, "Indeed, we are with you; we were only mockers."
[Al-Baqarah 2:14]
Allah the Exalted said:
[But] Allah mocks them and prolongs them in their transgression [while] they wander blindly.
[Al-Baqarah 2:15]
When the hypocrites come to you, [O Muhammad], they say, "We testify that you are the Messenger of Allah."
[Al-Munafiqun 63:1]
He says:
We testify that you are the Messenger of Allah
[Al-Munafiqun 63:1]
They emphasize this statement with the testimony, with "inna" (indeed), and with the lam (emphatic particle). So Allah the Exalted said:
And Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars.
[Al-Munafiqun 63:1]
A testimony stronger than that, testifying that they are liars in their statement: "We testify that you are the Messenger of Allah," not in the fact that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. For this reason, He added:
And Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars.
[Al-Munafiqun 63:1]
The hypocrite has signs by which he is recognized by one who has discernment, whom Allah the Exalted has granted discernment and light in his heart; he recognizes the hypocrite by observing his conduct. There are also apparent signs that do not require discernment, among which are these three that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned:
If he speaks, he lies
He says he became such and such, and became such and such, but if you investigate, you find that he lied about what he became. So if you see a person lying, know that there is a branch of hypocrisy in his heart. The second:
If he promises, he breaks it إذا وعد أخلف
He promises you but breaks his promise. For example, he says to you: "I will come to you at six in the morning," but he does not come. "I will come to you tomorrow after the midday prayer," but he does not come. "I will give you such and such," but he does not give it to you. When he promises, he breaks his promise. The believer, when he promises, fulfills it, as Allah the Exalted said:
[those who] fulfill their promise when they promise
[Al-Baqarah 2:177]
But the hypocrite promises you and deceives you; he does not fulfill his promise to you. So if you find a man frequently betraying his promises and not fulfilling them, then there is a branch of hypocrisy in his heart, may Allah protect us from that. The third:
When he is trusted, he betrays.
And this is the evidence from this hadith for this chapter. If you trust him with money, he betrays you. If you trust him with a secret conversation between you and him, he betrays you. If you trust him with your family, he betrays you. If you trust him with a sale or purchase, he betrays you. He betrays you in everything you trust him with, may Allah protect us from that. This is a sign of hypocrisy indicating that there is a branch of hypocrisy in his heart. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us of this news for two reasons: The first reason is that we should beware of these three blameworthy characteristics because they are signs of hypocrisy. It is feared that this practical hypocrisy may lead to doctrinal hypocrisy, may Allah protect us from that, so that a person becomes a hypocrite in faith and exits Islam without realizing it. So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us of this so that we may beware. The second reason is that we should beware of one who possesses these characteristics and know that he is a hypocrite who deceives us and plays with us... deceives us. So the benefit of this news is two things: First, that we avoid these traits in ourselves. Second, that we beware of one who possesses these characteristics and know that he is a hypocrite, and we do not trust him or rely on him in anything, because he is a hypocrite, may Allah protect us from that. So the opposite of that is among the signs of faith: the believer, when he speaks, tells the truth; the believer, when he promises, fulfills it; the believer, when he is trusted, performs the trust in its proper manner. This is the believer. And it is regrettable that some of the foolish people among us say: If you make a promise, he asks: "Is it an English promise or an Arab promise?" Because the English are the ones who fulfill their promises. This is undoubtedly foolishness and arrogance toward these disbelievers. Among the English there are Muslims and there are believers, but the majority of them are disbelievers, and their fulfillment of promises is not seeking the Face of Allah, but rather seeking to improve their conduct in the eyes of people. The believer, in truth, is the one who fully fulfills his promise. Therefore, it is obligatory that if you want to emphasize, you say to your companion: "Is it a believer's promise or a hypocrite's promise?" This is the correct way. As for "an English promise or an Arab promise," is your appointment with me a believer's promise that you will not break, or a hypocrite's promise that you will break? If he fulfills it, he is a believer; if he breaks it, he is a hypocrite. We ask Allah to protect us and you from practical and doctrinal hypocrisy, for He is Generous and Bountiful.
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
