The questioner : May Allah reward the honorableThe Shaykh : Is it permissible for a fasting person to eat during the pre-dawn meal while the mu'adhdhin is calling the prayer for Fajr? Some of the brothers say: There is no harm in eating while the mu'adhdhin is calling, and you may eat until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct from the black thread of night, even though he hears the mu'adhdhin calling the prayer for Fajr. What is your opinion, may Allah guide you? And if the criterion is until the white thread becomes distinct, what is the limit for people in that case?
The Shaykh : If the mu'adhdhin is trustworthy and calls the adhan after seeing the dawn, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions:Sahih Muslim 1092b He did not say "until you see the dawn." He said: "Until Ibn Umm Maktum calls the adhan," because Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him) does not call the adhan except when the dawn has appeared. So if a person eats within those five minutes, there is no harm in that, because many of the brothers who are astronomers told us that there is a five-minute advance in the Fajr adhan every day throughout the year. If a person eats one or two minutes after the time in the Umm al-Qura calendar, in our view, there is no blame on him. Yes.
