The questioner : In our blessed month of Ramadan, before the Dhuhr and Asr prayers, the people sitting in the mosque raise their voices in a collective supplication, which is: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah, we ask You for Paradise and we seek refuge in You from the Fire” three times. And after this supplication: “O Allah, You are the Pardoner who loves to pardon, so pardon us” three times. Then the prayer is established. What is your opinion of this supplication?
The Shaykh : Our opinion regarding this supplication is that it is an innovated supplication, for it was not known in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that people would stand and supplicate to Allah the Exalted collectively before the iqamah or after the prayers as well.
And whatever is newly invented is misguidance, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan an-Nasa'i 1578Sahih (Darussalam).
So my advice to these brothers is to return to the Sunnah of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and to look at what he used to do and follow him in his actions, and what he used to leave and follow him in his leaving. For the Sunnah of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) consists of action and leaving. If the cause for something existed in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he did not do it, then it is known that leaving it is the Sunnah. If they return to what came in the Sunnah regarding this issue, they will know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do this, nor did his Rightly Guided Caliphs do it, as far as we know. And the true believer is the one who, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, has no choice in that matter. Yes.
