The questioner : From Syria, the questioner Duhham says in this question: regarding making du'a' in congregation after the prayer on ordinary days, what is its ruling? May Allah reward you.
The Shaykh : Its ruling is that it is a bid'ah (religious innovation) from which one is forbidden, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saidMishkat al-Masabih 165Sahīh (Zubair `Aliza'i) Therefore, it is forbidden, and it is said to these people: We are followers, not innovators. Did the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions do this? Did the Caliphs do this? Did the Companions do this? The answer to all of this is, without a doubt, in the negative. Accordingly, this du'a' that is done in congregation after the obligatory prayers is forbidden.
And regarding the obligatory prayer, what do we do after it? Allah the Exalted said:[An-Nisa 4:103] This is what is prescribed.
And if a person wants to make du'a', it should be before the taslim, meaning before turning away from Allah (Mighty and Majestic), because as long as the one praying is praying, he is conversing with his Lord. When he says the taslim, the conversation ends. Is it better and more fitting for a person to make du'a' to Allah the Exalted while he is conversing with Him, or after he has finished? Without a doubt, the more appropriate and better is that it be before he turns away from his conversation. Then the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) guided us and said in the tashahhud, when he mentioned it and taught it:Sahih Ibn Hibban 10:238 So he made the du'a' before the taslim. As for after the taslim, it is dhikr (remembrance of Allah), as Allah the Exalted said: [An-Nisa 4:103] Accordingly, it is not recommended to make du'a' after the obligatory prayer or after the voluntary prayer, whether in congregation or individually.
The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh.
The Shaykh : Its ruling is that it is a bid'ah (religious innovation) from which one is forbidden, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said
You must therefore follow my sunna and that of the rightly guided Caliphs. Hold to it and stick fast to it. 1 Avoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is error.
عليكم بسنّتي وسنّة الخلفاء الراشدين المهديّين من بعدي وإياكم ومحدثات الأمور فإن كل محدثة بدعة وكل بدعة ضلالةAnd regarding the obligatory prayer, what do we do after it? Allah the Exalted said:
And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides
فَإِذا قَضَيتُمُ الصَّلاةَ فَاذكُرُوا اللَّهَ قِيامًا وَقُعودًا وَعَلى جُنوبِكُمAnd if a person wants to make du'a', it should be before the taslim, meaning before turning away from Allah (Mighty and Majestic), because as long as the one praying is praying, he is conversing with his Lord. When he says the taslim, the conversation ends. Is it better and more fitting for a person to make du'a' to Allah the Exalted while he is conversing with Him, or after he has finished? Then let him choose from the supplications whatever he wishes.
ثم ليتخيّر من الدعاء ما شاءAnd when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides
فَإِذا قَضَيتُمُ الصَّلاةَ فَاذكُرُوا اللَّهَ قِيامًا وَقُعودًا وَعَلى جُنوبِكُمThe questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh.
