The Shaykh’s discussion with the students regarding the contemplation of the Book of Allah and the levels of Qur’anic exegesis.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As for what follows, we spoke last night about the fact that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) revealed the Qur’an
that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.
[Sad 38:29]
So what is the meaning of *tadabbur* (contemplation)?
The student: Reflection.

The Shaykh : Reflection on the meaning of the Qur’an. Good. And we mentioned that in *tafsir* (exegesis), one refers to four things?
The student: ... Exegesis of the Qur’an by the speech of Allah, the speech of Allah.

The Shaykh : Yes.
The student: ... Exegesis of the Qur’an by the speech of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), exegesis of the Qur’an by the statements of the Companions, ... exegesis of the Qur’an by the statements of the Tabi'un (the generation after the Companions) who are known for having heard from the Companions.

The Shaykh : Good. The first is referring to the exegesis of the speech of Allah by the speech of Allah. What is an example of this? - You, yes, that's right -

The Shaykh : Huh? You don't know? Okay.
The student: His saying, the Exalted:
And what can make you know what is the Day of Judgment?
He explained it as
It is the Day when a soul will not possess for another soul [power to do] a thing
[Al-Infitar 82:19]

The Shaykh :
And what can make you know what is the Day of Judgment?
So what is the Day of Judgment?
It is the Day when a soul will not possess for another soul [power to do] a thing
[Al-Infitar 82:19]
Good. Another example? Rest, my brothers. Sit down, sit down. It is better for you and for those behind you.
The student: ...

The Shaykh :
And what makes you know what the star that comes down is?

The student:
(2) And what can make you know what is the night comer? (3) It is the piercing star -
[At-Tariq 86:2-3]
Good. And we mentioned two examples besides what the brother mentioned? Stand up.
The student: He explained it by saying "all together," meaning everyone, mentioning its meaning ... meaning individually.

The Shaykh : Good.
go forth in companies or go forth all together.
[An-Nisa 4:71]
If someone asked what is the meaning of "thibatan" (individually), we would say "individually" because of His saying
or go forth all together.
[An-Nisa 4:71]
because a thing is known by its opposite. Good, come on, the one behind you?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : No, exegesis of the Qur’an by the Qur’an. We mentioned two important examples, yes?

The Shaykh : Rest, yes.
The student: No,
For those who do good.
Good, you mixed them up. So give it to me?
The student: Exegesis of the Qur’an by the Sunnah. His saying, the Exalted:
For them who have done good is the best [reward] and extra
[Yunus 10:26]
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained it: the increase is looking at the Face of Allah (Mighty and Majestic).

The Shaykh : Good.
For them who have done good is the best [reward] and extra
[Yunus 10:26]
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained it: the increase is looking at the Face of Allah. Another example?
The student:
And prepare against them whatever you are able of power
[Al-Anfal 8:60]
In the hadith, it says:
Strength is archery.
.

The Shaykh : The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained it: the strength is archery. Good.
