The questioner : In *Sahih Muslim*, 'Amr ibn Shurayd narrates from his father that he was riding behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
Do you memorize anything of the poetry of 'Amir ibn Abi al-Salt? هل تحفظ شيئا من شعر أمية ابن أبي الصلت
He said, "Yes," and he said:
Recite for me. هيه
meaning, "Recite for me." So he recited a verse for him, and he said:
Recite for me. هيه
So he recited a verse for him until he counted a hundred verses, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He was close to accepting Islam in his poetry. إنه لكاد يسلم في شعره
.

The Shaykh : It is not that he was about to [accept Islam]; he was close to it.

The questioner : He was close to accepting Islam. May Allah reward you with good. The poetry of 'Amir ibn Abi al-Salt is, of course, the poetry of a polytheist of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance who did not reach the time of Islam and did not accept Islam. I want to ask about a specific verse, but I will quote two or three verses. He says: "To You belongs praise, blessings, and dominion, our Lord *** So nothing is more glorious or more majestic than You."
"The Sovereign upon the Throne of the heavens, the Supreme *** By His might, faces rise and prostrate."
The verse I want to ask about is:
"Upon Him is a veil of light, and light surrounds Him *** And rivers of light surround Him, blazing."
What is your opinion of this verse? May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : First, what concerns me is not my opinion of the verse, nor do I think that is what concerns you; rather, what concerns you is the meaning. Well, this meaning is mentioned in the hadith: "His veil is light." That is sufficient for the answer: "His veil is light."

The questioner : But his saying, "And rivers of light surround Him, blazing."

The Shaykh : This is poetic language. First, if a Muslim said it, it would be a verse of poetry.

The questioner : No, no, I mean as a repetition. I might use this verse or repeat it on my tongue. Is this permissible? Is this doctrinally sound?

The Shaykh : It is not sound with this expression. It is not sound because these are matters of the unseen, and it is not permissible to expand upon them beyond the limits of what has come in the explicit texts. What is more, it is first poetry, then poetry of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, and poetry of one who died in disbelief and associating partners with Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Please.
