The questioner : I have a colleague at work and in residence who does not perform the prayer in the required manner. I and he are in constant conflict over every obligatory prayer. Sometimes he prays and sometimes he does not, knowing that I wake him up for every obligatory prayer, then I go to the mosque, but I do not know if he prays or not? If I did not wake him up, he would continue sleeping, and he says that he is excused by sleep?
The Shaykh : I say: A friend like this, who shares the residence and work, has a right over his friend that he be with him constantly in advising him by speech or by writing, or by gifting tapes or messages. Perhaps Allah will guide him through his hand, for if Allah guides him through his hand, it is better for him than red camels. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said that. And if this friend prays when he is woken up, then a happy future and steadfastness upon the truth are hoped for him.
As for his excusing himself when he is woken up and does not wake up by saying that sleep is an excuse, there is no place for this excuse. As for one who wakes up by being woken up by another or by another means like an alarm clock, he has no excuse. Rather, it is obligatory for him to get up and seek help from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) with what Allah has made obligatory upon him of congregational prayer. And this friend should not despair of the guidance of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) for his friend, for the hearts are in the hand of Allah. But if it happens that he continues to leave this obligatory duty, then it is better that he seek another friend who will be a helper for him in the obedience of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), participating with him in his righteous work.
The questioner : May Allah bless you.
