What is the ruling in the Shari'ah regarding one who memorizes the Qur'an and then forgets it?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What is the ruling in the Shari'ah, in your view, O Shaykh, for the student who reads the Qur'an, then memorizes it, and then forgets it?

The Shaykh : If a person memorizes the Qur'an and then forgets it, if it is due to abandoning the Qur'an and turning away from it, then he has exposed himself to a great sin. But if it is due to human nature and disposition, or if something came to him that occupied him from maintaining it, then he does not sin by that. This is because forgetting is part of human nature, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Verily I am a human being like you, I forget just as you forget. إنما أنا بشر مثلكم أنسى كما تنسون
Sahih Muslim 572j
So if the forgetting is due to human nature, or because he was occupied with matters that are obligatory which caused him to forget some of the Qur'an, then that does not become a cause for his sin.
