The questioner : It is reported in an authentic hadith that when the deceased is placed in his grave, he is asked three questions: Who is your Lord, what is your religion, and who is your Prophet? Meanwhile, it is reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that one should wait at the deceased after his burial for the time it takes to slaughter a camel. Question: The three questions mentioned above do not take more than two or three minutes. Are there other questions that take the duration of slaughtering a camel? I hope you will inform me, and I thank you in advance.

The Shaykh : It is not reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that people stay at the grave for the time it takes to slaughter a camel; rather, that was reported from 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him). As for what is reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he used to stand over the grave when he finished burying the deceased and say:
Seek forgiveness for your brother and ask for him to be granted firmness استغفروا لأخيكم واسألوا له التثبيت
.
So what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded is that we stand after burying the deceased, once we have finished burying him, and stand over him and say: "O Allah, forgive him. O Allah, grant him firmness. O Allah, forgive him. O Allah, grant him firmness. O Allah, forgive him. O Allah, grant him firmness" three times, and then we leave. This is what is reported, so let us restrict ourselves to it.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
