The reciter: He said, may Allah have mercy on him: "Chapter on supplicating for the deceased after his burial, sitting at his grave for a while, supplicating for him, seeking forgiveness for him, and reciting [the Qur'an] for him. It was narrated from Uthman ibn al-Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he finished burying the deceased, would stand over him and say:
Seek forgiveness for your brother, and beg steadfastness for him, for he will be questioned now. استغفروا لأخيكم وسلوا له التثبيت فإنه الآن يسأل
Sunan Abi Dawud 3221Sahih (Al-Albani)
Abu Dawud narrated it. It was also narrated from 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: When you bury me, stand around my grave for the time it takes to slaughter a camel and distribute its meat, so that I may feel at ease with you and know what I will answer with when the messengers of my Lord come to me. Muslim narrated it"

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author said, may Allah have mercy on him, in the book *Riyad al-Salihin*: "Chapter on standing after the burial of the deceased and supplicating for him and seeking forgiveness for him". This is because when the deceased is buried, two angels come to him and question him about his Lord, his religion, and his Prophet. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), when he finished burying the deceased, would stand over him, meaning at his grave, and say:
Seek forgiveness for your brother, and beg steadfastness for him, for he will be questioned now. استغفروا لأخيكم واسألوا له التثبيت فإنه الآن يسأل
Sunan Abi Dawud 3221Sahih (Al-Albani)
It is recommended for a person, when people have finished burying the deceased, to stand at his grave and say: "O Allah, forgive him. O Allah, forgive him. O Allah, forgive him. O Allah, grant him steadfastness. O Allah, grant him steadfastness. O Allah, grant him steadfastness" three times, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mostly, sometimes, when he supplicated, he would supplicate three times. Then he would leave and not sit afterwards, neither for dhikr nor for recitation nor for seeking forgiveness. This is how the Sunnah came. As for what he mentioned, may Allah have mercy on him, regarding 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) that he ordered his family to stand around him when they buried him for the time it takes to slaughter a camel, he said: "So that I may feel at ease with you until I see what I will answer with when the messengers of my Lord come to me", meaning the angels. This was his ijtihad (independent legal reasoning), may Allah be pleased with him, but it is an ijtihad that is not agreed upon, because the way of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) is more perfect than the way of others. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not stand or sit at the grave after burial for the time it takes to slaughter a camel and distribute its meat, nor did he order his Companions to do so. The most that is there is that he ordered them to stand at the grave, seek forgiveness for the owner of the grave, and ask for steadfastness for him. This is the Sunnah. Then the people leave. As for recitation at the grave, the most correct view is that it is disliked (makruh), and it is disliked for a person to go to the grave and then stand or sit at it and recite, because this is from religious innovations (bid'ah). And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
Every innovation is misguidance. كل بدعة ضلالة
And the least of its states is that it is disliked. And Allah grants success.
The reader: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He said, may Allah have mercy on him: "Chapter on charity on behalf of the deceased and supplicating for him. Allah the Exalted said:
And [there is a share for] those who came after them, saying, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith والذين جاؤوا من بعدهم يقولون ربنا اغفر لنا ولإخواننا الذين سبقونا بالإيمان
[Al-Hashr 59:10]
It was narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that a man said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): My mother died suddenly, and I think that if she had been able to speak, she would have given charity. Is there any reward for me if I give charity on her behalf? He said:
Yes نعم
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. It was also narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When a man dies, his deeds come to an end, except for three: A continuous charity, knowledge by which people derive benefit, pious son who prays for him. إذا مات الإنسان انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاث صدقة جارية أو علم ينتفع به أو ولد صالح يدعو له
Riyad as-Salihin 949
Muslim narrated it"
