The meaning of the saying of Allah the Exalted: "And when man is touched by hardship, he calls Us, whether on his side, or sitting, or standing."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : These are the ones who do not expect to meet Allah; Allah leaves them, abandoning them in their transgression and extending their respite. But this is a gradual leading astray by Allah (Mighty and Majestic) until, when He seizes them, He does not let them escape. As Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said—rather, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah gives respite to the oppressor, but when He takes him over, He never releases him.
Sahih al-Bukhari 4686
. And he recited the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(102) And thus is the seizure of your Lord when He seizes the cities while they are committing wrong. Indeed, His seizure is painful and severe. (103) Indeed in that is a sign for those who fear the punishment of the Hereafter
[Hud 11:102-103]
But We leave the ones who do not expect the meeting with Us, in their transgression, wandering blindly
[Yunus 10:11]
And when affliction touches man, he calls upon Us, whether lying on his side or sitting or standing
[Yunus 10:12]
. When man is touched by hardship, by what? By what does hardship touch him? By illness, or by a disability, or by the loss of children, or by poverty. The word "hardship" is general; whatever causes harm, where does one turn? To Allah. For this reason, He said:
on his side دعانا لجنبه
, meaning on his side
or sitting or standing
[Yunus 10:12]
. A person is either on his side, or standing, or sitting. So he calls Us in all circumstances, calling upon Allah the Exalted to remove the hardship. But will he give thanks when His hardship is removed?
