The Shaykh : As for Rajab, the people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance used to hold it in high esteem and perform 'Umrah in it. But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) made the 'Umrah in Ramadan a substitute for the 'Umrah in Rajab. He said (peace and blessings be upon him and his family): Jami` at-Tirmidhi 939Sahih (Darussalam) Jami` at-Tirmidhi 939Sahih (Darussalam). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) never performed 'Umrah in Rajab. His 'Umrahs were only in the months of Hajj, in Dhul-Qa'dah. Let us look at the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed four 'Umrahs after his migration, only four 'Umrahs after his migration. And you know how many years he remained in Madinah? How many?
The student: Ten years.
The Shaykh : Ten years. And yet he did not perform 'Umrah except three times: two 'Umrahs before the conquest of Makkah, and two 'Umrahs after the conquest of Makkah. The two 'Umrahs before the conquest of Makkah are: the first is the 'Umrah of Hudaybiyyah. The 'Umrah of Hudaybiyyah, where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed 'Umrah and had with him in that 'Umrah one thousand and four hundred men, one thousand and four hundred. They entered the state of ihram from Dhul-Hulayfah and brought with them livestock and camels to be sacrificed at the Sacred House. When he reached Hudaybiyyah, at the boundary of the Haram, the polytheists prevented him. They said, "You cannot enter." Why? Because they said, "We are the guardians of the Haram. You cannot enter our sacred precinct, or the Arabs will say we were taken by force, meaning we were coerced." And the peace treaty took place between them and the Messenger (may Allah's prayer and peace be upon him), which many of you know. Among the conditions of the peace was that the Messenger (may Allah's prayer and peace be upon him) would return later. He said, "Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik, Labbaik for an 'Umrah after [next year]," after he had brought the sacrificial animals with him to draw near to Allah by slaughtering them in the Haram? He would return. After he had put on the clothes of ihram? He would remove them, not wear the clothes of ihram. This condition was among the most difficult things for the Muslims. So much so that 'Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah:. May Allah send prayers and peace upon him. So 'Umar was granted the 'Umrah until he came to it and circumambulated the Ka'bah.
