Question:
A message was received for the program from: the lady (Q) from Maysan Governorate in Iraq, who says: I, my husband, and my daughter have been in need twice, and we have not performed 'Umrah. My daughter’s father passed away, and while he was alive, he was determined to perform Hajj and 'Umrah but did not perform 'Umrah. Is it permissible for me and my daughter to perform 'Umrah for him? We have not performed 'Umrah for ourselves. My daughter performed Hajj twice, but she had not reached the age of maturity, and now she has reached the age of maturity. Is it permissible for her to perform 'Umrah for her father? Or for one of our relatives? Or for a stranger?
Please direct us regarding this matter.
May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
The daughter must perform Hajj; because she performed Hajj before she reached maturity, so she must perform Hajj, the obligatory Hajj, after reaching maturity, and 'Umrah as well. And you too, you must perform 'Umrah. It is not permissible for you two to perform 'Umrah for the deceased until you have performed 'Umrah for yourselves. And if it is facilitated for someone to perform 'Umrah for him from among the people who have already performed 'Umrah for themselves, even if by proxy, or by paying what helps him to do so; then there is no harm in that.
And 'Umrah is obligatory once in a lifetime, like Hajj. So the one who has not performed 'Umrah in the past must perform 'Umrah if he is able to do so, like Hajj. As for the one who is unable; then he owes nothing, neither Hajj nor 'Umrah, because Allah the Exalted says: [Al-Imran: 97].
So every able man and woman, once they reach the age of maturity; must perform Hajj once in a lifetime, and perform 'Umrah once in a lifetime. And if he performs Hajj for himself, and performs 'Umrah for himself; then it is permissible for him to perform Hajj for another from among the deceased, and to perform 'Umrah for another from among the deceased, from his relatives and others. And likewise, it is permissible for him to perform Hajj for the unable, such as the very old man; because he is like the deceased. And for the very old woman who is unable to perform Hajj, it is permissible for their relatives to perform Hajj for them and 'Umrah for them. Yes.
