The questioner : The questioner asks: What is the ruling on citing verses from the Noble Qur'an during conversation? The one who does so cites the story of the woman who spoke with the Qur'an as evidence. Is this correct?

The Shaykh : The question is: What is the ruling on citing verses? Citing verses is permissible in practice. As for the story of the woman he referred to, is this woman described as one who speaks with the Noble Qur'an? This story was mentioned in *Jawahir al-Adab*. This woman did not speak except with the Qur'an; she made the Qur'an a substitute for speech. The man who was addressing her asked her, and she addressed him with the Qur'an. He asked her family why, and they said: "This woman has not spoken except with the Qur'an for so many years, for fear that she might slip and the Most Merciful would become angry with her." We say that this is the very slip itself, because it is forbidden for a person to make the Qur'an a substitute for speech. The Qur'an was revealed to be recited and to be a lesson, not to be made a substitute for speech. Yes.
