The Meaning of the Saying of Allah the Exalted: "Take what is easy, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The second thing I want to speak about is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant. خذ العفو وأمر بالعرف وأعرض عن الجاهلين
[Al-A'raf 7:199]
Who is the address directed to? To whom is the address directed?
To the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but the address directed to the Messenger is directed to us, by the saying of Allah the Exalted:
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern لقد كان لكم في رسول الله أسوة حسنة
[Al-Ahzab 33:21]
.
"Take what is easy." What does "take what is easy" mean? He did not say, Mighty and Majestic, "forgive," but rather He said:
Take what is easy خذ العفو
So there is a taker and a thing taken. That means, take what is easy in dealing with people. Take what is easy in dealing with people. You do not want people to give you everything you want, never. You do not want people to give you everything you want, because whoever wants people to give him everything he wants will miss out on everything he wants. Are people your slaves, doing what you want? Answer, my brothers. No. Take what is easy from them. If they harm you, bear it. If they do not fulfill your right, bear it. If they wrong you, bear it. Take the easy part that comes from people; take it. This is the meaning of the verse. If you dealt with people in this manner, you would be at peace, your soul would be settled, and you would be far from alcohol and high blood pressure, and the like of such diseases. If you take the easy part, take what is easy from people, and do not seek what you missed out on. For this reason, He said:
and enjoin what is right وأمر بالعرف
Suppose a man is ignorant toward you, insults you, and says about you what he says. What is your position if you want to be raised in accordance with the requirement of this verse?
That you take what happened and then say to him, "My brother, this is not fitting for someone like you. Leave this and be polite with people." This is the meaning of His saying:
and enjoin what is right وأمر بالعرف
That is, do not leave the one who harms you and is ignorant toward you to harm you and be ignorant toward you, but advise him. "Enjoin what is good."
The third: what is it?
turn away from the ignorant. أعرض عن الجاهلين
[Al-A'raf 7:199]
This is like His saying, the Exalted:
and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace, وإذا خاطبهم الجاهلون قالوا سلاما
[Al-Furqan 25:63]
And by Allah, if we dealt with people in accordance with this verse, we would find our chests open and our hearts at peace. But due to our ignorance, we want people to deal with us as we want, and this does not happen. So whoever asks people for everything he wants, what does he miss out on? Everything he wants. So take this verse, my brother, and deal with people by it, so that time may be clear for you to the extent that you deal with people, and you may be at peace. But some people say, "How can this man transgress against me? How can he diminish my right? And by Allah, I am speaking for others, not for myself, and I hope Allah will inspire me with patience. And by Allah, I will measure back to him what is the sa'?" The sa' is two sa's, and then he insults him more. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
(The burden of) what is said by the two who vilify each other is upon the one who initiated it, as long as the one who was wronged does not transgress. المستبان ما قالا فعل البادئ منهما ما لم يعتدي المظلوم
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1981Sahih (Darussalam)
So deal with people, my brother, in this manner. Take the easy part. What does it mean? What is the meaning of "the easy part"? Please. No, the brother, here.

The Shaykh : Well done. Take what comes from people and leave the rest, even if they harm you or do not know your worth. It does not concern you as long as you know yourself. Be a personality; people do not concern you. Rest. "Enjoin what is good." The connection. "Enjoin what is good" by His saying:
Take what is easy خذ العفو
What is its connection? Yes.

The Shaykh : Well done. That is, a concise word, what Allah willed. He says, if he insults you, advise him. Good. This is:
turn away from the ignorant. أعرض عن الجاهلين
[Al-A'raf 7:199]
Its connection is clear. That is, do not follow them, and do not have anxiety in your heart, because some people, when they forgive and turn away from their companion, start thinking, "How did I not say this to him? How did I not speak about him? I have now been defeated, I have been let down," and the like of that. And this is wrong. Make your lamp, the one you follow, what this verse has indicated. I hope you, my brothers, will always be like that in dealing with people.
As for the third, we have spoken about it before. It is the one who knows that there is no god but Allah. We mentioned at the beginning of our sitting here that we would speak about three things. We have spoken about two now. And the third? Please. Yes.

The Shaykh : Perfect. Leaving the qunut in the witr, and we said that this is a good practice so that the common people do not think that the witr must include the qunut, and that is not the case.
As for now, we return to the questions. How many questions are left for you? How many are left? No, it is half. Half is four minutes. May Allah reward you. Yes.

The questioner : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad.

The Shaykh : There will be, if Allah wills, a competition this month. If you see that we should hold a competition in 'aqidah, in tafsir, in hadith, in terminology, in fiqh, in fara'id, in grammar, yes, and in usul, and in other sciences. And we want some of you who have knowledge of other things related to astronomy or physics or things we know nothing about to give them to us so that we can put them in the questions. Yes.
