Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Al-Qari: He said (may Allah have mercy on him): "The Chapter on Forbearance, Deliberation, and Gentleness:
Allah the Exalted said:
and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good;
[Ali 'Imran 3:134]
.
And He the Exalted said:
Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.
[Al-A'raf 7:199]
.
And He the Exalted said:
(34) And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend. (35) But none is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except one having a great portion [of good].
[Fussilat 41:34-35]

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author said (may Allah have mercy on him): "The Chapter on Forbearance, Deliberation, and Gentleness": These are three closely related matters: forbearance, deliberation, and gentleness.
As for forbearance: it is for a person to control himself when angry. If anger arises and he is able to act, he should be forbearing and not punish, nor hasten to punish.
As for deliberation: it is to be deliberate in matters and not to be hasty, and for a person not to take things at face value, thereby hastening and judging a thing before he deliberates and looks into it.
As for gentleness: it is dealing with people with gentleness and ease. Even if they deserve the punishment and retribution they deserve, he should be gentle with them. However, this applies only if the person being treated gently is worthy of gentleness. If he is not worthy of gentleness, then Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said:
The [unmarried] woman or [unmarried] man found guilty of sexual intercourse - lash each one of them with a hundred lashes, and do not be taken by pity for them in the religion of Allah, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment.
[An-Nur 24:2]
.
Then the author cited verses. Regarding the first verse, he said:
and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good;
[Ali 'Imran 3:134]
: This is among the attributes of the righteous for whom Paradise has been prepared: that they suppress their anger. When they become angry, they suppress their anger. And in His saying:
Those who restrain anger
: there is evidence that it is difficult for them, but they overcome themselves and suppress their anger. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The strong one is not the one who overpowers others in wrestling
"Al-Sura'a" means the one who throws people to the ground when they wrestle with him
but the strong man is one who controls himself when he is in a fit of rage.
Sahih Muslim 2609a
.
As for His saying:
and who pardon the people
[Ali 'Imran 3:134]
, the discussion and detailed explanation of who deserves forgiveness and who does not has already been mentioned. The malicious person who, when forgiven, only becomes worse, more fierce, and more defiant, is not to be forgiven. And the person who is worthy of forgiveness, a person should forgive him, because Allah says:
but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due] from Allah
[Ash-Shuraa 42:40]
.
As for the second verse, it is His saying:
Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.
[Al-A'raf 7:199]
He said:
Take what is easy
and did not say: "Forgive," nor "Do forgiveness." He said:
Take what is easy
. The meaning of "al-'afw" (the easy) here is what is easy and simple from people. If a person wants people to deal with him in the way he loves, in the most perfect way, that is difficult for him, hard, and tiring, and it is behind the people. But if a person takes guidance from this verse and takes what is easy from people and what is simple, then he accepts what comes from them, and he leaves what they neglected of his right, except if the prohibitions of Allah are violated. This is what Allah guided to: we take the easy. Take what is easy of the character of people and their dealings with you, and you are the one who has the merit in leaving the rest.
and enjoin what is right وأمر بالعرف
: This means: enjoin what people recognize and what the Shari'ah recognizes of matters of good. Do not remain silent about enjoining good if people neglect it. In what is between you and them regarding your right, do as you wish, but the well-known thing should be enjoined.
and turn away from the ignorant.
[Al-A'raf 7:199]
: The meaning of "al-jaahil" (the ignorant) here is not the one who does not know the ruling, but the ignorant one is the foolish one in conduct, as Allah the Exalted said:
The repentance accepted by Allah is only for those who do wrong in ignorance
[An-Nisa 4:17]
meaning: with foolishness,
and then repent soon after. It is those to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness
[An-Nisa 4:17]
. So the ignorant ones here are the foolish ones who are ignorant of the rights of others and are negligent of them. Turn away from them and do not care about them. And if you turn away from them and do not care about them, they will eventually get tired and then return to their right path. But if you defy them or argue with them or want them to give you your full right, they may, due to their foolishness, defy you and not give you what you want. So these are three commands from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in which there is good if we follow them.
Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.
[Al-A'raf 7:199]
And the rest of the discussion on the verses will come, if Allah wills.
