The hadith "Whoever dies without having a pledge of allegiance in his neck dies the death of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance." What is the meaning of this hadith?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The Shaykh:
one who dies without having bound himself by an oath of allegiance (to an Amir) will die the death of one belonging to the days of Jahillyya. من مات وليس في عنقه بيعة مات ميتة جاهلية
Sahih Muslim 1851a
What is the meaning of this hadith?

The Shaykh : Its meaning is that it is obligatory for a person to have an imam, and it is not permissible for anyone, ever, to remain without an imam. Because if he remains without an imam, he remains without authority and without a ruler. And Allah the Exalted says:
O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ وَأُولِي الْأَمْرِ مِنْكُمْ
[An-Nisa 4:59]
.
And this one who died without having a pledge of allegiance in his neck is an outlier who has strayed from the path of the believers, because the believers must have a leader under any circumstances. So if this person deviates and becomes an outlier, he has strayed from the path of the believers.
