The Shaykh : This contains evidence for the obligation of the pledge of allegiance to the imam, and that whoever dies without a pledge of allegiance in his neck dies a death of ignorance, even if the imam is a sinner, even if he is given authority while committing lewd acts and major sins. It is obligatory for you to have a pledge of allegiance to him in your neck, because if you do not do so, you will die a death of ignorance. But in our time now, who is the imam? There is no general imam. Therefore, every piece of land has an amir to whom a pledge of allegiance has been made in that piece of land, and he is the imam. For example, those who are not from Saudi Arabia have a pledge of allegiance to the imams of their country, because he is from the people of this country, and it is obligatory to obey the one to whom Allah has given authority.
Abdullah ibn Umar came to Abdullah ibn Muti' when the events of al-Harra occurred during the time of Yazid ibn Mu'awiyah. He said, "Place a cushion for Abu 'Abd al-Rahman."
