The questioner : His EminenceThe Shaykh : There are camps that are in the wilderness, for example.
The Shaykh : What?
The questioner : The camps.
The Shaykh : Yes.
The questioner : They are in the wilderness, meaning, what is the distance for which they are excused from seeking water if there is no water and they perform tayammum?
The Shaykh : The one who is in the wilderness—here, here to your right, not to my right—the distance: if people are in the wilderness and they do not have water, they are excused for performing tayammum if seeking water is difficult for them. The criterion in that is custom, meaning, if it is not the custom or if people say that it is far, then it is far, and if people say that it is near, then it is near. Meaning, there is no legal limit.
The questioner : Meaning, O Shaykh, ten minutes, for example, by car, ten minutes?
The Shaykh : Ten minutes by car is far.
The questioner : Far?
The Shaykh : Yes, especially if the road is sand. Yes.
The Shaykh : What?
The questioner : The camps.
The Shaykh : Yes.
