The questioner : In the hadith, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Verily, Allah is Graceful and He loves Grace
Sahih Muslim 91a
As he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said in a hadith, the meaning of which is:
Indeed, Allah the Exalted loves to see the effect of His bounty upon His servant
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 31:130
I have read in the school textbooks about the biographies of some of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them and satisfy them), and I have learned from their asceticism, their piety, and their austerity in food, clothing, and housing, despite their wealth and abundance of money. So much so that 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) would wear clothes similar to those of the boys and servants working for him. The question is: Does this contradict the concepts of the two previous hadiths? And is it required for a wealthy, affluent person to have an appearance befitting his financial status, or is he required to wear, live, and eat whatever he wishes within the limits of the Islamic Shari'ah, without extravagance or arrogance? And what is the meaning of the command to speak of the blessings in the saying of the Exalted:
But as for the favor of your Lord, report [it].
[Ad-Duhaa 93:11]
?

The Shaykh : The first hadith:
Verily, Allah is Graceful and He loves Grace
Sahih Muslim 91a
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this when the people said, “A man loves for his sandal to be good and his garment to be good.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Verily, Allah is Graceful and He loves Grace
Sahih Muslim 91a
Meaning, he loves to adorn himself in clothing, in sandals, in the garment, in the head covering, and in the outer robe, because this is part of displaying the effects of Allah’s bounty, and it agrees with the hadith he mentioned, which is:
Indeed, if Allah bestows a bounty upon a servant, He loves to see the effect of His bounty upon him
.
And the effect of the bounty is according to the bounty. So the effect of the bounty of wealth is that a person should increase in giving charity and benefiting creation. Likewise, he should wear what is befitting for him from garments. So much so that some scholars said: If a wealthy man wears the clothes of the poor, his garment is considered a garment of showing off. However, need may call for it, and the benefit may lie in a person wearing the clothes of the poor if he is living among a poor community and he loves to dress like them so that their hearts are not broken. In this case, he may be rewarded for this intention and given the reward according to his intention.
And as for the saying of the Exalted:
But as for the favor of your Lord, report [it].
[Ad-Duhaa 93:11]
The meaning is that a person speaks of the bounty of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) upon him in order to display the favor of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) upon him, and that what he has attained of this bounty is not by his own power and strength, but by the bounty and grace of Allah. Speaking of the bounty is done by speech and by action.
So it is done by speech, for example, by saying to people on an occasion: “Allah the Exalted has given me wealth after I was poor, and He has given me children after I was alone, and the like of that. And Allah has guided me after I was without guidance.”
And speaking by action is to do what indicates this bounty. If he is a scholar, he teaches the people. If he is wealthy, he benefits the people with his wealth. If he is strong, he benefits the people by repelling from them what harms them, according to the situation.
And as for what you mentioned about some of the Companions and their austerity, this is by way of humility so that those around them do not have their hearts broken because they are unable to wear clothes like theirs or eat food like theirs. And a person considers the benefits in these matters.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
