What is your opinion of this verse: Is there no protector for us after this humiliation who answers the cry of the oppressed and achieves victory? Is there no one after Salah al-Din who protects us, while the Gypsies have joined forces to enslave us?

The questioner : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Your Eminence, in the week before last, you issued a ruling on these two verses: I have obtained permission from the questioner, and you had paused regarding them:
"Is there no protector for us after this humiliation *** who answers the cry of the oppressed and achieves victory
Is there no one after Salah al-Din who protects us *** while the Gypsies have joined forces to enslave us"
?

The Shaykh : Yes, these two verses:
"Is there no protector for us after this humiliation *** who answers the cry of the oppressed and achieves victory":
If he means by "the protector" the person of al-Mu'tasim, then this is major shirk (associating partners with Allah), because he called upon a dead person, and calling upon the dead is shirk. Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
(5) And who is more astray than he who invokes besides Allah those who will not respond to him until the Day of Resurrection, and they, of their invocation, are unaware. (6) And when the people are gathered [that Day], they [who were invoked] will be enemies to them, and they will be deniers of their worship.
[Al-Ahqaf 46:5-6]
And He, the Exalted, said:
And whoever invokes besides Allah another deity for which he has no proof - then his account is only with his Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will not succeed.
[Al-Mu'minun 23:117]
So Allah made that disbelief. However, if he does not mean al-Mu'tasim himself, but rather that Allah will prepare for us a great, heroic leader like al-Mu'tasim, then there is nothing wrong with that. But it is prohibited to use this phrase in this manner, because it suggests that we are calling upon whom? Al-Mu'tasim himself. And whatever suggests falsehood, one should be cautious of it.
As for the second one, which says "Is there no one after," the verse is broken.
"Is there no one after Salah al-Din who protects us *** while the Gypsies have joined forces to enslave us":
The same is said about this one as about the first. If he means Salah al-Din himself, then this is also disbelief, because Salah al-Din does not protect; Salah al-Din is dead and does not protect anyone. And if he means by this—and I do not think it is correct to mean by this—that Allah will bring us a man like Salah al-Din, because he said:
"Is there no one after Salah al-Din who protects us": and the verse has some awkwardness.
But in any case, this verse may be less severe than the one before it, because it seems he is saying: We have no one after Salah al-Din who protects us. It is said to him: This generalization is questionable, because the One who protects you from evil is Allah, Mighty and Majestic, before Salah al-Din and after Salah al-Din. Then, Salah al-Din is not the greatest leader in the Islamic community. The greatest leader in the Islamic community is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then those who followed him among the caliphs and Muslim commanders, such as Khalid ibn al-Walid and others. So Salah al-Din is not the greatest leader.
And in any case, a person must be cautious of such verses and not mention them unless accompanied by an explanation that they are of no value, and that their general use is not permissible.
