The questioner : In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy, and may prayers and peace be upon the noblest of the prophets and messengers:
What is the ruling on women attending weddings where there is beating of the hand drum and the drum, especially if she is concerned that there may be drums before going to the wedding, whether there are drums or not, and what is the ruling on paying money to the woman who plays the drum, whether from the woman or from the host of the wedding?
The Shaykh : As for the wedding that has only the hand drum, there is nothing wrong with attending it, provided that the songs are permissible. As for if there are drums, it is not permissible to attend. The difference between the drum and the hand drum is that the drum is covered on both sides, while the hand drum is covered on one side. However, if a woman goes to this wedding and then is surprised by the drums, she should forbid them from this and advise them. If they comply, that is what is required. Otherwise, it is obligatory for her to leave.
The questioner : And paying money to the woman who plays the drum?
The Shaykh : As for paying money to the hand drum players, there is nothing wrong with it, because it is for a permissible work. As for paying it to the drum players, it is not permissible, because it is for a forbidden work. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Ibn Hibban 26:35.
The questioner : And what is the ruling on a woman dancing to these hand drums?
The Shaykh : Dancing is disliked, especially if there is a fear of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) from it. Sometimes the dancer is a young, beautiful woman, and her dancing arouses desire, even among women.
