Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Mu'adh ibn Fadhalah narrated to us, saying: Hisham, who is al-Dustawa'i, narrated to us from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir from Abdullah ibn Abi Qatadah from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whenever anyone of you drinks water, he should not breathe in the drinking utensil, and whenever anyone of you goes to a lavatory, he should neither touch his penis nor clean his private parts with his right hand. إذا شرب أحدكم فلا يتنفس في الإناء ، وإذا أتى الخلاء فلا يمس ذكره بيمينه ولا يتمسح بيمينه
Sahih al-Bukhari 153

And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
When one of you drinks, then do not breathe into the vessel. إذا شرب أحدكم فلا يتنفس في الإناء
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1889Sahih (Darussalam)
.
The scholars said: The wisdom behind this is that if one breathes, the water may splash out, because the breath goes up and the water goes down, so it splashes.
The second is that this breathing may carry pains and harmful substances...
