The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The new lesson: "And from Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When one of you drinks, then do not breathe into the vessel. إذا شرب أحدكم فلا يتنفس في الإناء
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1889Sahih (Darussalam)
"
:
If he drinks إذا شرب
: The word "drink" includes every beverage, whether water, milk, juice, or otherwise,
If he drinks إذا شرب
.
And his saying:
do not breathe into the vessel فلا يتنفس في الإناء
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1889Sahih (Darussalam)
means: do not exhale into the vessel from which you are drinking, whether that is while sipping the drink or after it.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited this because, if a person is in the middle of drinking, the breath may collide with the drink that has descended, causing choking. If it is not in the middle of drinking, it contaminates the drink for others and makes it distasteful to them. Also, a person may have hidden diseases that are expelled with the breath until they adhere to the vessel or the drink. Therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited that.
Then, if one breathes in the middle of drinking, it resembles an animal, because many animals breathe while they are drinking. Some animals do not breathe while drinking; if they want to breathe, they raise their heads. Thus, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited breathing into the vessel.
But we say: What is recommended for a person in the state of drinking? Is it recommended to take it in one breath, and we say: do not breathe into the vessel, but be patient until you are satisfied, then breathe after that outside the vessel? Or what do we say?
We say: The Sunnah for the drinker is to breathe three times, and not to gulp the water in one breath, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
That is more pleasant, more pure, and more wholesome إن ذلك أهنأ وأبرأ وأمرأ
: meaning breathing three times. This is in cases where the situation does not require breathing more than three times, because some drinks require the situation to breathe more than three times, such as?
Are you Khalil here?
The student: The hot one.

The Shaykh : Yes, like the hot one. The hot one requires breathing more than three times. Likewise, the extremely cold one requires breathing more than three times. Because you take a dose, then keep it in your mouth until it warms up a little, then swallow it. But for ordinary drink, a person breathes three times in it; that is the Sunnah.
