Explanation of the Book on Ablution, the Full Bath, Menstruation, and Dry Ablution-04b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us, saying: Jarir narrated to us from al-A'mash from Mundhir, Abu Ya'la al-Thawri, from Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah, who said: Ali said:
I was a man who emitted a great deal of madhi, but I felt too shy to ask the Messenger of Allah كنت رجلا مذاء فاستحييت أن أسأل رسول الله
Musnad Ahmad 1238Hasan because of corroborating evidence] (Darussalam)
.

The Shaykh : Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah is the son of Ali ibn Abi Talib, but his mother was from the captives of Banu Hanifah, so he was named Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah. He was among the best of the sons of Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) after al-Hasan and al-Husayn. He is the one who asked his father, saying: "O my father, who is the best of people after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "Abu Bakr." He said: "Then who?" He said: "'Umar." He did not ask about the third. I said: "Then you?" He said: "I am nothing but a man among the Muslims."
The reciter: From Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah, who said: Ali said:
I used to get emotional urethral discharges frequently and felt shy to ask Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) about it. So I requested Al-Miqdad bin Al-Aswad to ask (the Prophet (ﷺ) ) about it. Al-Miqdad asked him and he replied, "One has to perform ablution (after it)." كنت رجلا مذاء فاستحييت أن أسأل رسول الله صلّى الله عليه وسلم فأمرت المقداد بن الأسود فسأله فقال : فيه الوضوء
Sahih al-Bukhari 178
.
Shu'bah also narrated it from al-A'mash.

The Shaykh : Pre-seminal fluid is a thin liquid that comes out without a person being aware of it, following sexual desire. People differ in this regard; some do not experience it at all, some experience it frequently, and some experience it in a moderate amount. However, pre-seminal fluid only occurs due to sexual desire. As for what a person may suffer from due to illnesses that cause the discharge of a sticky substance like pre-seminal fluid but without sexual desire, that is not pre-seminal fluid. Even if some laypeople ask about it as if it were pre-seminal fluid, it is not so; it is not pre-seminal fluid. Pre-seminal fluid is what occurs due to sexual desire. But what comes out in a jet with pleasure is semen, which is a coagulated, weak liquid. "Weak" means coagulated and not flowing, unlike pre-seminal fluid.
The ruling on pre-seminal fluid lies between urine and semen, neither in terms of its effect nor in terms of what it necessitates. In terms of its effect, semen necessitates the full ritual bath, while pre-seminal fluid necessitates washing the penis and the testicles and performing ablution. Nor is it the same in terms of its removal; it is not obligatory to remove semen because it is pure, but it is obligatory to remove pre-seminal fluid, though it is not like urine. For it, sprinkling is sufficient. Sprinkling is when a person pours water over it to cover it, without washing and without rubbing, because its impurity is light. However, it necessitates washing the penis and the testicles. Urine does not necessitate washing the penis and the testicles; it only necessitates washing what the urine touched, which is the head of the penis. It may sometimes extend to the entire glans or to the urethra, but the obligation is only to wash what the urine touched.
The author cited this hadith, may Allah have mercy on him, to argue that what comes out of the private parts invalidates the ablution, based on the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):
Ablution is required for it فيه الوضوء
.
Among the benefits in the hadith are: modesty, and that if modesty does not prevent a person from asking about what is obligatory for him, there is no harm in it. Did the modesty that affected Ali in this matter prevent him from asking? No, because he instructed al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad to ask.
