The reciter: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. And may prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
Al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) said in the Book of Ablution in his Sahih, under the heading:
"Chapter on Reciting the Qur'an After Breaking Ritual Purity and Other Matters".
Isma'il narrated to us, saying: Malik narrated to me from Makhramah ibn Sulayman from Kuraib, the freed slave of Ibn Abbas, that Abdullah ibn Abbas informed him:
That he stayed overnight in the house of Maimuna the wife of the Prophet, his aunt. He added : I lay on the bed (cushion transversally) while Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and his wife lay in the lengthwise direction of the cushion. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) slept till the middle of the night, either a bit before or a bit after it and then woke up, rubbing the traces of sleep off his face with his hands. He then, recited the last ten verses of Sura Al-`Imran, got up and went to a hanging water-skin. He then Performed the ablution from it and it was a perfect ablution, and then stood up to offer the prayer. I, too, got up and did as the Prophet had done. Then I went and stood by his side. He placed his right hand on my head and caught my right ear and twisted it. He prayed two rak`at then two rak`at and two rak`at and then two rak`at and then two rak`at and then two rak`at (separately six times), and finally one rak`a (the witr). Then he lay down again in the bed till the Mu'adh-dhin came to him where upon the Prophet (ﷺ) got up, offered a two light rak`at prayer and went out and led the Fajr prayer.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : There are narrations in the chapter title, "Chapter on Reciting the Qur'an After Breaking Ritual Purity and Other Matters", which we have discussed.
Mansur said about Ibrahim: "There is no harm in reciting in the bathroom". Ibrahim al-Nakha'i was one of the jurists of the Tabi'un (may Allah have mercy on him), but as the Shaykh al-Islam said about him, he was not that strong in hadith, though he was good in fiqh. "There is no harm in reciting in the bathroom" means that there is no harm in a person reciting in the bathroom. However, there is some concern about this, especially if it is reciting the Qur'an. As for reciting other than the Qur'an, one should not recite either, because reciting entails staying in the bathroom for a long time.
For this reason, it is mentioned that some people, when these European-style toilets were made, would take a newspaper or a magazine with them when they entered the place of relief, then sit on the seat and stand up to read. When would this person leave the bathroom?
And this is an error. For this reason, a person should not remain in the bathroom except for the duration of the need only, and then leave.
He said: "And there is no harm in writing a letter without ablution". Writing a letter without ablution was mentioned because it will contain: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful," which is from the Qur'an. It is known that the Qur'an is not to be touched except by one in a state of purity. But what is written on paper and not intended as the Qur'an does not have the ruling of the Qur'an.
For this reason, we say: If a person in a state of major ritual impurity recites a verse from the Qur'an not intending to recite but intending to make supplication, there is no harm. Or if he intends to praise, there is no harm. So if a person in a state of major ritual impurity says, for example, after finishing eating: "All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds," intending thereby to praise Allah, there is no blame on him. And if he says:
[Who say], "Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower. ربنا لا تزغ قلوبنا بعد إذ هديتنا وهب لنا من لدنك رحمة إنك أنت الوهاب
[Ali 'Imran 3:8]
intending thereby to make supplication, there is no harm.
And Hammad said from Ibrahim: "If they are wearing waist cloths, greet them; otherwise, do not greet them". This means in the bathroom: if you pass by people and they are wearing waist cloths, greet them. And if they are not wearing waist cloths, do not greet them. But it is not possible for them not to be wearing waist cloths unless they are inside the bathroom, with a wall between you and them. But you may hear their voices or the movement of water. So the point is that he says: greet them, even in the bathroom, if they are wearing waist cloths. As for if they are not wearing waist cloths, do not greet them. Do you see this narration?
