I am asking about the 'aqiqah in our country. First, I would like to explain to you how we perform the 'aqiqah for our children. For example, if a child is born to us on a Sunday, we perform the 'aqiqah for him on the following Sunday.

The questioner : The 'aqiqah in our country. First, I would like to explain to you how we perform the 'aqiqah for our children. For example, if a child is born to us on a Sunday, we perform the 'aqiqah for him on the following Sunday. We slaughter a sheep or a cow, and sometimes only a sheep. We divide the meat into three parts: two parts for the in-laws and one part for the husband. If we do not send anything to the in-laws, a dispute, estrangement, and severance of ties will occur between us and them, and sometimes it leads to divorce. This is because the in-laws come and take the woman, leaving the infant with his father. We seek a ruling on this matter, may you be rewarded?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment. And we return the greeting to our brother the questioner, may peace and the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon him. Then, we thank Allah (Mighty and Majestic) for making this blessed pulpit one whose voice reaches the east and west of the earth.

The questioner : Praise be to Allah.

The Shaykh : And the Muslims benefit from it in every place. And we ask Allah the Exalted to increase everyone from His bounty.

The questioner : Amen.

The Shaykh : And to grant us beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds.

The questioner : Amen.

The Shaykh : And a good and abundant provision.

The questioner : Amen, O Allah, Amen.

The Shaykh : As for what he mentioned regarding their practice in the 'aqiqah, the 'aqiqah is a confirmed recommended practice (sunnah) that one who is able to perform it should not leave. It is a recommended practice to be slaughtered on the seventh day of birth, not on the eighth day as this questioner said. If a child is born on a Wednesday, for example, the 'aqiqah is on the Tuesday. If a child is born on a Tuesday, the 'aqiqah is on the Monday. If a child is born on a Monday, the 'aqiqah is on the Sunday. If a child is born on a Sunday, the 'aqiqah is on the Saturday.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And so on. Then, the 'aqiqah is not recommended from anything other than sheep. It is not recommended from cows or camels. Rather, the recommended practice is that it be from sheep: two sheep for a male and one sheep for a female.
And with limited means, one sheep is sufficient for a male. Then, it is not befitting for there to be any discord or dispute between the husband and his in-laws over the distribution of this 'aqiqah. Rather, it is distributed either in thirds or halves, with a share for the poor, a share for the family and neighbors, and a share for the friends. And if the owner wishes, after fulfilling the share for the poor, to cook it and gather people around it, there is no harm.

The questioner : Very well.

The Shaykh : So the matter is broad in this regard.
The scholars said: If the slaughter is missed on the seventh day, it is slaughtered on the fourteenth day. And if it is missed on the fourteenth, it is slaughtered on the twenty-first day. And after that, the weeks are not considered. But let him strive to have it slaughtered on the seventh day. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you. This listening brother, Muhammad al-'Ali, says: O honorable Shaykh.
