Commentary on the poet's statement: They said, and these are verbal appearances *** that have not benefited one who seeks proof, so reason is better to be resorted to than *** these appearances

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh :"They said, and these are verbal appearances *** that have not benefited one who seeks proof"
These refer to the Book, the Sunnah, and the reports, which are verbal appearances that do not benefit one who seeks proof and evidence.
"So reason is better to be resorted to *** than these appearances, in the view of the one who knows"
This means: Since these are verbal appearances that do not benefit, we must return to what? To reason, according to their claim.
"Then each claimed that reason is what *** he said, to the exclusion of the other party"
When they said we return to reason, and there were ten of them, the first said: reason is what I said; the second said: reason is what I said; the third said: reason is what I said; the fourth said: reason is what I said, up to the tenth. Each one says reason is what I said. How many reasons are there? Ten, all differing from one another. This is why you find them to be the most disputing and differing of people, because Allah says:
If it had been from [any] other than Allah, they would have found within it much contradiction. ولو كان من عند غير الله لوجدوا فيه اختلافا كثيرا
