The questioner : What is your guidance, O honorable Shaykh, for fathers regarding the high cost of bridal gifts so that the young man is able to marry? We ask for an answer to this.
The Shaykh : Yes. I advise my brothers, the young men, and the guardians to fear Allah the Exalted by refraining from exaggerating in bridal gifts. Exaggeration in bridal gifts may lead to something the husband dislikes; it may make marriage difficult, causing one to resort to something forbidden; and it may lead a person to incur debts that weigh heavily on his shoulders.
High bridal gifts also lead to a man’s attachment to his wife, even if he dislikes her, so that their life becomes one of misery. High bridal gifts are contrary to what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged, for the most blessed marriage is the one with the least expense.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married a man with two sandals and said to another man:Sunan an-Nasa'i 3359Sahih (Darussalam) If exaggeration in bridal gifts were a means of piety to Allah or a virtue in the sight of Allah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have been the most deserving of it.
So my advice to everyone is to lower the bridal gifts as much as possible. In reality, marriage is not for the purpose of increasing the bridal gift or obtaining it, but rather marriage is for the woman to be with a righteous man who protects her chastity, through whom she attains a happy life and assistance in righteousness and piety, the protection of chastity, lowering the gaze, and so on. Yes.
The questioner : May Allah bless you. This is a message received from listener F M M, who says to the honorable Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen: Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings.
The Shaykh : And upon you be peace, and Allah's mercy and blessings.
The questioner : You say.
