Explanation of the Book of Prayer and Its Times-09b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Ibrahim ibn Hamzah narrated to us, saying: Ibn Abi Hazim and al-Darawardi narrated to me from Yazid, meaning Ibn 'Abd Allah ibn al-Had, from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim, from Abu Salama ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, from Abu Hurayrah, that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
If there was a river at the door of anyone of you and he took a bath in it five times a day would you notice any dirt on him?" They said, "Not a trace of dirt would be left." The Prophet (ﷺ) added, "That is the example of the five prayers with which Allah blots out (annuls) evil deeds." أرأيتم لو أن نهرا بباب أحدكم يغتسل فيه كل يوم خمسا ما تقول : ذلك يبقي من درنه . قالوا : لا يبقي من درنه شيئا . قال : فذلك مثل الصلوات الخمس يمحو الله به الخطايا
Sahih al-Bukhari 528
.

The Shaykh : We have a reference to another copy that has this, do you have it like this? Yes.
The apparent meaning of this hadith is that the five prayers expiate all sins, but it was reported with the condition that major sins are avoided. Therefore, the unrestricted text is to be understood in light of the restricted one, and there is no doubt in this, because the ruling is the same.
But if it is reported regarding another act, such as:
Whoever says "Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi" (Glory be to Allah and His praise) one hundred times, Allah will forgive his sins, even if they were like the foam of the sea. من قال سبحان الله وبحمده مئة مرة غفر الله له خطاياه ولو كانت مثل زبد البحر
, is it said that the mentioned glorification expiates both small and major sins because of its apparent generality? Or is it said that if the five prayers, which are the greatest of acts of worship after the two testimonies, do not expiate sins except with the condition of avoiding major sins, then what is less than them is all the more so?
This is the position of the majority of scholars. Similarly, his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever performs Hajj (pilgrimage) and does not have sexual relations (with his wife), nor commits sin, nor disputes unjustly (during Hajj), then he returns from Hajj as pure and free from sins as on the day on which his mother gave birth to him. من حج فلم يرفث ولم يفسق رجع كيوم ولدته أمه
Riyad as-Salihin 1274
, do we say this is with the condition that one does not commit a major sin?
The majority hold this view, and some of them took the unrestricted text at its face value, saying that the restricted text restricts it, and stating that there is no analogy in the reward of deeds. Therefore, we leave unrestricted what Allah and His Messenger left unrestricted, and we hope that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) will make this unrestrictedness or this generality comprehensive. Yes.
