Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions:
He said (may Allah have mercy on him): "Chapter on the Virtues of the Prayers:
Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:Sahih Muslim 667 It is agreed upon.
And from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Riyad as-Salihin 1043 Muslim narrated it.
And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Riyad as-Salihin 1045 Muslim narrated it.
And from Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:Riyad as-Salihin 1046 Muslim narrated it".
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
These hadiths are among the virtues of the prayers. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) likened the prayers to a flowing, abundant river: an abundant river is one with much water, flowing, meaning the opposite of stagnant. A person bathes in it five times a day; would any of his dirt remain? The answer is: No, none of his dirt would remain. So likewise, the five prayers cause Allah to erase sins until the person remains pure and clean from sins.
But as we have mentioned previously, this applies to the prayers that a person completes, perfects, and attends to with his heart, feeling that he is conversing with Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). If the prayer is completed as required, this great reward is obtained: that Allah erases sins by them. Also, among the virtues of the five prayers is:: meaning, as long as you do not commit them. So the five prayers expiate minor sins, but they do not expiate major sins. For example, deception in transactions is a major sin among the major sins, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) disavowed the one who does it, saying: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1315Sahih (Darussalam): So if a person prays the five prayers while being deceptive, the deception is not expiated, because it is a major sin. Swearing falsely about a commodity, saying: "By Allah, I was given such and such for it," while lying, or "By Allah, it is of such and such a type," while lying, is also among the major sins.
As the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan Ibn Majah 2208Sahih (Darussalam): Likewise, if a person lets his garment hang down out of arrogance, this is among the major sins, and it is not expiated for him when he prays. In fact, if he lets it hang down to below the ankles, meaning: lower than the ankles, even if it is not out of arrogance, it is among the major sins, so it is not forgiven by his prayer, even if he prays; this action is not forgiven because it is a major sin.

just see, can anything of his filthiness remain (on the body of) any one of you if there were a river at his door in which he washed himself five times daily? They, said: Nothing of his filthiness will remain (on his body). He said: That is like the five prayers by which Allah obliterates sins.
And from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The similitude of the five (obligatory) Salat is like a river running at the door of one of you in which he takes a bath five times a day.
مثل الصلوات الخمس كمثل نهر غَمرٍ جارٍ على باب أحدكم يغتسل منه كل يوم خمس مراتAnd from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The five (daily) Salat (prayers) and the Friday (prayer) to the Friday (prayer) expiate whatever (minor sins) may be committed in between, so long as major sins are avoided.
الصلوات الخمس، والجمعة إلى الجمعة، كفارة لما بينهن ما لم تُغشَ الكبائرAnd from Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
When the time for a prescribed Salat is due and a Muslim performs its Wudu' and its acts of bowing and prostration properly, this Salat will be an expiation for his past sins, so long as he does not commit major sins, and this applies for ever.
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
