The Reciter: Chapter: The Obligation of the Friday Prayer. By the saying of Allah the Exalted:
when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.
[Al-Jumu'ah 62:9]
.

The Shaykh : Al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) has a book of hadith and fiqh, and therefore he titles chapters and brings titles that correspond to what the hadith he is narrating requires. By this, he is distinguished from Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him). Muslim is distinguished by gathering the various chains of a hadith in one place, which makes it easier for the person. Each of them has his own perspective.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) began with the virtue of Jumu'ah by the saying of Allah the Exalted:
O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah
[Al-Jumu'ah 62:9]
Who is called by the caller? The mu'adhdhin.
And His saying:
on the day of Jumu'ah يوم الجمعة
indicates that there is another call other than the day of Jumu'ah, which is the call for the five prayers, as is well known.
So hasten to the remembrance of Allah
means: walk. The "hastening" (sa'y) here means walking, not running, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade running for one who walked to the prayer. "Sa'y" is used for mere effort, as in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
But whoever desires the Hereafter and exerts the effort due to it
[Al-Isra 17:19]
, where "sa'y" means running for it.
And His saying:
to the remembrance of Allah
indicates that the khutbah is part of the remembrance of Allah. We derive from this an important benefit, which is that knowledge, its teaching and learning, is part of the remembrance of Allah, because the khutbah is nothing but the teaching of knowledge and its learning.
And His saying:
Leave the sale
means: leave it, leave off trade. Trade was specifically mentioned because it is what happens most often. Is it like the other contracts? Some scholars said: What is similar to trade in that it is an exchange is like it. Accordingly, one must leave off leasing, because leasing is the sale of benefit in reality, and so on.
As for giving, there is no harm in it. The marriage contract, there is no harm in it, and so on.
But the correct view is that one must leave off everything that occupies one from hastening to the remembrance of Allah. Everything that occupies one, whether it is giving, a marriage contract, a pledge, taking a pledge, or otherwise. As for the specific mention of trade, it is because it is the most common.
And His saying:
That is better for you.
"That" means: your hastening to the remembrance of Allah and leaving off trade is better for you. Better than what? Better than your remaining in buying and selling.
And His saying:
[Fasting for] a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] - then an equal number of days [are to be made up]. And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]. And whoever volunteers excess - it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.
[Al-Baqarah 2:184]
is an independent sentence. It is not befitting for the reciter to connect it to what came before it, but rather to pause. "That is better for you," because if you connect it and say
That is better for you, if you only knew.
[At-Tawbah 9:41]
, then its being better for us becomes conditioned by what? By the fact that we know. And that is not the case. But the meaning is: "If you know," meaning: if you are among those of knowledge, then know that. This occurs often in the Qur'an. The conditional sentence comes, and some people connect it to what came before it, perhaps out of negligence or perhaps out of ignorance. But when such a thing comes, pause, then resume and say:
[Fasting for] a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] - then an equal number of days [are to be made up]. And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]. And whoever volunteers excess - it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.
[Al-Baqarah 2:184]
. And like that is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(5) No! If you only knew with knowledge of certainty... (6) You will surely see the Hellfire.
[At-Takathur 102:5-6]
. The one who connects this changes the meaning by connecting it, because if he said
(5) No! If you only knew with knowledge of certainty... (6) You will surely see the Hellfire.
[At-Takathur 102:5-6]
, they will not see it except if they know with the knowledge of certainty. And that is not the case. For this reason, the person pauses at
No! If you only knew with knowledge of certainty...
[At-Takathur 102:5]
and then reads:
you would see the Hellfire لترون الجحيم
, because the sentence "so that you will see the Hellfire" is an independent sentence.
