The reciter: Musaddad narrated to us, Abu al-Ahwas narrated to us, Mansur ibn al-Mu'tamir narrated to us, from al-Sha'bi, from al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, who said: Sahih al-Bukhari 983.
The Shaykh : We have previously spoken about this hadith, and now we are reminding you of a matter: if a person prays before the time, thinking that the prayer is permissible or that the time has entered, what is the status of his prayer? It is a voluntary prayer. And if he slaughters his 'Id sacrifice before the prayer, it is just a sheep of meat, meaning that you are free to do with it as you wish regarding the meat: give it in charity or send it as a gift.
The difference between them is that the genus of prayer is prescribed within the time and before the time, whereas the 'Id sacrifice is prescribed after the time. For this reason, it cannot be a valid sacrifice. This is a matter that may be difficult to understand, such that a person might object to the scholars' statement by saying: if a person prays, the time has entered, and then it turns out that the time had not entered, his prayer is voluntary. Someone might say his prayer is invalid. The answer is that the difference is this: the genus of prayer is prescribed within the time and before it, whereas the 'Id sacrifice is not prescribed except after the prayer.
On the day of Nahr Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) delivered the Khutba after the `Id prayer and said, "Anyone who prayed like us and slaughtered the sacrifice like we did then he acted according to our (Nusuk) tradition of sacrificing, and whoever slaughtered the sacrifice before the prayer, then that was just mutton (i.e. not sacrifice)." Abu Burda bin Naiyar stood up and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! By Allah, I slaughtered my sacrifice before I offered the (Id) prayer and thought that today was the day of eating and drinking (nonalcoholic drinks) and so I made haste (in slaughtering) and ate and also fed my family and neighbors." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "That was just mutton (not a sacrifice)." Then Abu Burda said, "I have a young she-goat and no doubt, it is better than two sheep. Will that be sufficient as a sacrifice for me?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "Yes. But it will not be sufficient for anyone else (as a sacrifice), after you."
The Shaykh : We have previously spoken about this hadith, and now we are reminding you of a matter: if a person prays before the time, thinking that the prayer is permissible or that the time has entered, what is the status of his prayer?
