Reading a research paper on the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud regarding the prayer for rain.

The reader: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon His servant and messenger:
This is a research paper on the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). First... Al-Bukhari narrated it in several places, the longest of which is where Al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) said in the Book of Tafsir, in the interpretation of Surat Sad: Al-Bukhari said: Muhammad ibn Kathir narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, Mansur and al-A'mash narrated to us, from Abu al-Dhuhah, from Masruq, who said: While a man was speaking in Kindah, he said: Smoke will come on the Day of Resurrection and seize the hearing and sight of the hypocrites; it will affect the believer like a cold. We were alarmed, so I went to Ibn Mas'ud, who was reclining, so he sat up and said: Let the one who knows speak, and let the one who does not know say, "Allah knows best," for among the signs of knowledge is to say, regarding what one does not know, "I do not know." Indeed, Allah said to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):[Sad 38:86]. And when the Quraysh delayed in accepting Islam, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) invoked against them, saying: "O Allah, help me against them with seven [years of famine] like the seven [years] of Yusuf." So a famine took hold of them until they perished in it, and they ate carrion and bones. A man would look between the sky and the earth and see it like smoke. Then Abu Sufyan came to him and said: "O Muhammad, you have come to order us to maintain family ties, and your people have perished, so invoke Allah." So he recited: [Ad-Dukhan 44:10] up to His saying: "Will they not be removed from the punishment of the Hereafter when it comes, then they will return to their disbelief?" That is His saying, the Exalted: [Ad-Dukhan 44:16]: The Day of Badr, and "Lazama" (the binding): The Day of Badr [Ar-Rum 30:1-2] up to , and the Romans have already passed.
And in another narration in Al-Bukhari: He was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and it was said to him: "O Messenger of Allah, invoke for rain for Mudar, for they have perished." He said: So he invoked for rain for them, and it rained, and then it was revealed: When they were afflicted with comfort, they returned to their state when they were afflicted with comfort, so Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed: [Ad-Dukhan 44:16] He said: This means the Day of Badr.
As for Imam Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him), he said in the chapter on the Smoke in the verses that occur before the Hour, hadith 6997: He said: Ishaq narrated the hadith with his chain from Masruq, who said: We were sitting with Abdullah, and he was lying down among us. A man came to him and said: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, a preacher is at the gates of Kindah preaching and claiming that the sign of the Smoke will come and seize the breaths of the disbelievers, and it will affect the believers like a cold." So Abdullah said, and he sat up in anger: "O people, fear Allah. Let the one among you who knows something speak according to what he knows, and let the one who does not know say: 'Allah knows best.' For it is better for one of you to say, regarding what he does not know: 'Allah knows best.' Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the turning away of the people, he said: Sahih al-Bukhari 1007 He said: So a famine took hold of them that swept away everything, until they ate skins and carrion from hunger. One of them would look at the sky and see it like smoke. Then Abu Sufyan came to him and said: "O Muhammad, you have come to order obedience to Allah and to maintain family ties, and your people have perished, so invoke Allah for them." Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: [Ad-Dukhan 44:10] up to His saying: , He said: "Will the punishment of the Hereafter be removed?" [Ad-Dukhan 44:16] So the seizing (al-batshah) was the Day of Badr, and the sign of the Smoke has already passed, as have the seizing and the binding, and the sign of the Romans.
And in a wording in Muslim similar to the other narration mentioned in Al-Bukhari, except that he said: "He sought forgiveness" instead of "he invoked for rain," and he said: "So he invoked Allah for them" instead of "he invoked for rain and it rained."
Al-Hafiz said in *Tahdhib al-Tahdhib* in the biography of Asbat ibn Nasr al-Hamadhani, who is the one with the addition in our hand in the problematic hadith: Harb said: I said to Ahmad: How is his hadith? He said: "I do not know", as if he weakened it.
And Abu Hatim said: I heard Abu Nu'aym weaken him, and he said: His hadiths... have inverted chains. And al-Nasa'i said: He is not strong.
I said: Al-Bukhari left a hadith of his in a marginal note regarding the prayer for rain—and it is the problematic hadith—and Imam Ahmad and al-Bayhaqi connected it in the *Sunan al-Kubra*. It is a denounced hadith, which I clarified in the commentary.
And Al-Bukhari said in his *Middle History*: He is truthful. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in *Thiqat*. And Ibn Ma'in said: "He is nothing" And he said once: "He is trustworthy" And Musa ibn Harun said: "There was no harm in him". And the Hafiz (may Allah have mercy on him) said in *Taqliq al-Ta'liq 'ala Sahih al-Bukhari* in part two, page 390:
After mentioning the addition of Asbat, al-Bayhaqi said in the *Sunan* and also in the book *al-Dala'il*: Abu Abd Allah al-Hafiz informed us, he said: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd ibn 'Utbah narrated to us, he said: Ali ibn Thabit narrated to us, he said: Asbat ibn Nasr narrated from Mansur from Abu al-Dhuhah from Masruq from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: When the Messenger of Allah saw the turning away of the people, he said:Sahih al-Bukhari 1007 And he mentioned the hadith, and its completion is with al-Bayhaqi in 3/352: Sahih Ibn Hibban 23:298 up to the end of the hadith: "So Abu Sufyan and some people from the people of Mecca came to him, and they said: 'O Muhammad! You claim that you were sent as a mercy, and your people have perished, so invoke Allah for them.' So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) invoked, and the rain fell, and seven [years of rain] covered them. So the people complained of the abundance of rain, and he said: Sahih al-Bukhari 1020."
He said: Indeed, the sign of the Smoke has already passed, and it is the hunger that afflicted them, and it is His saying, the Exalted: And Imam Ahmad said in his *Musnad* with his chain from Sharhabil ibn al-Samt: Ka'b ibn Murrah said: "O Ka'b ibn Murrah, tell us about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and be cautious." He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: A man came to him and said: "Invoke Allah for rain for Mudar." So he said: He said: "O Messenger of Allah, you sought help from Allah and He helped you, and you invoked Allah and He answered you." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his hands and said: He said: So they were revived. He said: It was not long before they came to him and complained to him of the abundance of rain, and they said: "The houses have collapsed." So he raised his hands and said: Sahih al-Bukhari 1020 He said: So he walked with a swagger to the right and to the left. Imam Ahmad and al-Hakim narrated it, and al-Hakim said: It is good and authentic, its chain is according to the conditions of the two Shaykhs, and al-Dhahabi approved it, and the researcher of the *Musnad* said: Its chain is good.
And al-Qastallani said in his commentary on the hadith of the chapter regarding the addition: " Meaning: Al-Bukhari. And in a narration: Abu Abd Allah said, and it dropped from the narration of Abu Dharr, and he limited himself to his saying: And Asbat added. Then he mentioned the narration of Ka'b: Then he said: So it seems that Abu Ka'b ibn Murrah and Abu Sufyan were both present, so Abu Sufyan spoke to him about something, and Ka'b about something else, which indicates the unity of their stories. And what is established in this story, meaning the story of Ka'b, is what is established in similar hadiths like that of Abu Sufyan. The narration of Ka'b's story suggests that it was in Medina. It is not necessary that it be the same as the story of the hadith of Anas, because in the narration of Anas: 'So he did not descend from the pulpit until they were drenched.' And in this one: 'It was not but a Friday.' And the questioner is not the same questioner, so they are two stories."
And al-'Ayni said: "And among those who objected to Al-Bukhari regarding the addition of Asbat is al-Dawudi, who is 'Abd al-Malik, and they mixed up the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud and the hadith of Anas. And al-Hafiz al-Dimyati said the same, and he said: 'And the hadith of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud was in Mecca and does not contain this.' And some of them supported Al-Bukhari by saying: 'There is no obstacle to that happening twice,' and in this there is a consideration that is not hidden."
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, this is the most apparent view: that there is a mix-up from Asbat, and that the story of the Quraysh is that the Messenger invoked for them, and they were rained upon, and it ended. Yes.

اللهم اسقنا غيثا مغيثا، مريعا، مريئا، طبقا غدقا ، عاجلا، غير رائث، نافعا غير ضارNarrated Masruq: One day I went to Ibn Mas`ud who said, "When Quraish delayed in embracing Islam, the Prophet (ﷺ) I invoked Allah to curse them, so they were afflicted with a (famine) year because of which many of them died and they ate the carcasses and Abu Sufyan came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, 'O Muhammad! You came to order people to keep good relation with kith and kin and your nation is being destroyed, so invoke Allah I ? So the Prophet (ﷺ) I recited the Holy verses of Sirat-Ad-Dukhan: 'Then watch you For the day that The sky will Bring forth a kind Of smoke Plainly visible.' (44.10) When the famine was taken off, the people renegade once again as nonbelievers. The statement of Allah, (in Sura "Ad- Dukhan"-44) refers to that: 'On the day when We shall seize You with a mighty grasp.' (44.16) And that was what happened on the day of the battle of Badr." Asbath added on the authority of Mansur, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) prayed for them and it rained heavily for seven days. So the people complained of the excessive rain. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'O Allah! (Let it rain) around us and not on us.' So the clouds dispersed over his head and it rained over the surroundings."
