The Ruling on Performing Tawaf on Behalf of Another

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Our sister asks and says: What is the tawaf of seven circuits that some people perform for their parents, or their relatives, after the 'Umrah? Did it come from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he did it?

Answer:
It did not come, to our knowledge, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did it, and it is not recommended to do it for the dead, nor for others. A person does it for himself; he performs tawaf for himself with the intention, worshipping Allah through tawaf around the Ka'bah for seven circuits for himself. He volunteers this as an act of worship, and in it is great good, and it is among the causes of the erasure of sins.
It is obligatory for the pilgrim and the one performing 'Umrah to perform tawaf around the House: tawaf al-ifadah, tawaf al-wada', and tawaf al-'umrah. All these tawafs are obligatory: tawaf al-ifadah on the day of 'Id for the pilgrim, or after 'Id likewise; tawaf al-wada' when leaving; and tawaf al-'umrah, and sa'y al-'umrah. All these tawafs are obligatory. And if he performs tawaf voluntarily, it is a great act of worship, and he has a great reward in it, and it is among the causes of the expiation of sins. But for him to perform tawaf for his father, or for his brother, or for so-and-so, there is no evidence for it.
Some of the scholars of knowledge hold that there is no harm in performing tawaf for his brother, or for another, but there is no evidence for it. And tawaf is prayer, so just as he does not pray for anyone, he does not perform tawaf for anyone. This is the original ruling, and this is the correct view. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. As for the complete 'Umrah, or the complete Hajj, is it permissible, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh: Yes, the complete Hajj, and the complete 'Umrah on behalf of the dead, or the elderly person who is unable, the one who is unable to perform Hajj due to his old age and frailty; there is no harm. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
