Intending the Farewell Tawaf to Count as the Tawaf of Ifadah

The first question of Fatwa No. ( 15041 )
Q1: Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has honored me by performing the obligatory Hajj three times. In each instance, I did not perform the Tawaf of Ifadah; I only performed the Farewell Tawaf. This was because I was told that the Farewell Tawaf suffices for the Tawaf of Ifadah. This year, I heard that the Tawaf of Ifadah is a pillar of Hajj, and that whoever leaves it has an invalid and incomplete Hajj. Is it true that the Farewell Tawaf suffices for the Tawaf of Ifadah, or is my Hajj in the three instances incomplete? What should I do so that my Hajj, if Allah wills, is a complete, non-defective Hajj accepted by Allah the Exalted? Also, if it is permissible to complete the deficiency in my Hajj, when should I complete it? Should it be on the same day, or on different days for the three instances, as in one of the instances my wife was with me and she did not perform the Tawaf of Ifadah like I did? Is it permissible for her to appoint me to perform the Tawaf on her behalf to complete her Hajj, if there is a completion to be done, or should she go herself to complete it?
He said that on one occasion, he was with his wife, and she had not performed the tawaf of departure, just as he had not. He asked whether it is permissible for her to appoint him as her agent to perform the tawaf on her behalf so that she can complete her Hajj, if there is any completion left, or whether she should go herself to complete it.
A1: It appears from the questioner’s statement that he intended the Tawaf of Ifadah along with the Farewell Tawaf; because he knew that he had two Tawafs to perform: one for Ifadah and one for Farewell. He performed a single Tawaf for Farewell, intending that it would suffice for him for the Tawaf of Ifadah. Based on this, his action is valid, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih al-Bukhari 1 The jurists have explicitly stated that if one delays the Tawaf of Ifadah and performs it after leaving, it suffices for the Farewell Tawaf. The most that can be said is that he misunderstood, thinking that the Farewell Tawaf suffices for the Tawaf of Ifadah, whereas the Tawaf performed was one. He erred only in his understanding, and he is excused for his error. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
