The Shaykh : In this noble verse as well, there is the permissibility of standing at the grave, based on His statement regarding the hypocrites: This implies that the believers are to be stood over at their graves. But is standing at their graves to be done by slaughtering animals at the grave, or giving money as charity at the grave, or reciting the Qur'an at the grave? No, no, no, and no. Because if that were what was intended, the first one to do it would have been whom? The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and he did nothing more than stand at the grave and say: Sunan Abi Dawud 3221Sahih (Al-Albani) So, once the deceased is buried, we stand over him and say: O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, make him firm, O Allah, make him firm, O Allah, make him firm, three times, and then we leave. And never do we do anything other than this: no recitation of the Qur'an, no charity, and no slaughtering, because if this were the truth, the first one to act upon it would have been whom? The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions, and they did not act upon it. And if they did not act upon it, it is not the truth. And what is there after the truth but misguidance? For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Every innovation is misguidance.
