Mentioning some issues related to wudu' and its method.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Uthman called for wudu'. Wudu' — with the waw open — is the water with which a person performs wudu'. Al-wudu' — with the waw closed — is the act of performing wudu'. For example, if I bring a vessel containing water, what do I call the water? Wudu'. And if I start by washing my hands, then my face, then wiping my head, and washing my feet, this is al-wudu'. He called for water with which to perform wudu', and he performed it (may Allah be pleased with him). He did this because teaching by action is stronger than teaching by speech, because when you teach someone by action, he understands the meaning by hearing and sees it being done, and it remains in his heart because the image remains in his imagination. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sometimes taught by action. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Farewell Pilgrimage, he used to say to the people — what? — :
Take your rituals from me خذوا عني مناسككم
. The complete wudu' involves washing the palms three times before washing the face, then rinsing the mouth and sniffing water into the nose three times, then washing the face three times, then the hands up to the elbows, then wiping the head, meaning and the ears, then washing the feet three times. This is the complete wudu'. The obligatory part of this is one wash; two is better, and three is better, and four is a sin. Do not exceed three. Here are some issues:
If a person starts by washing his hands up to the elbows before washing his face, what is the ruling? The wudu' is not valid. The wudu' is not valid. One must start with the face before the hands. If you reverse the order, the wudu' is not valid, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
I begin with what Allah (has commanded me) to begin أبدأ بما بدأ الله به
Sahih Muslim 1218a
. And in another wording:
We will start with that with which Allah started. ابدؤوا بما بدأ الله به
Sunan an-Nasa'i 2962Sahih (Darussalam)
. So the order is obligatory. If a person reverses the wudu', the wudu' is defective. Also, washing the face includes rinsing the mouth and sniffing water into the nose, because the nose is in the face and the mouth is in the face. So rinsing the mouth and sniffing water into the nose are internal to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Wash your faces اغسلوا وجوهكم
Clear? Yes, or no? Good. The boundary of the face: the face is that by which one faces. Its boundary in width is from ear to ear. So the white space between the ear and the cheekbone, is it part of the face or not? It is part of the face. Its boundary in length is from the curve of the forehead, the curve of the forehead, to the bottom of the beard, even if it is long. It is obligatory to wash this. As for the hand, its boundary is from the tips of the fingers to the elbow. And the elbow is part of what must be washed. The elbow is the joint between the upper arm and the forearm. The upper arm is the part at the shoulder. The forearm is what is below it. You must wash all of this from the tips of the fingers to the elbow. And the elbow is included in the washing.
and wipe your heads واسمحوا برءوسكم
The head is the highest part of the body, and therefore it is called a head because it leads the rest of the body.
If we asked a questioner, what is the highest thing in you, my brother? Answer yes. Stand up, man. Stand up, man. Here, the highest thing in you is the head, the hair, then the cap. — Pay attention, man —. The hair is part of the head, my brother. Good, sit down. In any case, the head is taken from the concept of leading. For this reason, it is obligatory to wipe the entire head. As for what descends from the head in terms of hair, because some people may have hair that descends to the shoulder or lower, it is not obligatory to wipe it. It is not obligatory to wipe it because it has exited being a head where it descended. Based on this, what does a woman wipe from her head? Does she wipe from her hairline to the bottom of her tresses?
The answer: No, she only wipes from the hairline to the end of the hair roots. This is what achieves the leading.
and wash your feet to the ankles واغسلوا أرجلكم إلى الكعبين
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
Do you know the ankles, brother? One question, one. Do not stretch out your left hand, man. Yes, the two protruding bones in the foot. This is the protrusion on the back of the foot. Like this. Here. Meaning, you don't know the ankle, and it is present in your foot. The two protruding bones in what? In the foot. These are two bones. The protruding bone at the bottom of the foot here. At the bottom of the lower leg. May Allah reward you. Rest. The two protruding bones at the bottom of the lower leg. And the ankles are included in the washing, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) explained it by his action, so he used to wash the elbow and wash the ankle. Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said, I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
If anyone performs ablution like that of mine and offers a two-rak`at prayer during which he does not think of anything else (not related to the present prayer) then his past sins will be forgiven. من توضأ نحو وضوئي هذا ثم صلى ركعتين لا يحدث فيهما نفسه غفر الله له ما تقدم من ذنبه
Sahih al-Bukhari 164
And the meaning of "whispers in them" is: what does it mean? Yes, whispers, intrusive thoughts. How many people pray, and you find them in the mosque behind the imam, but, by the will of Allah, their heart wanders between the sky and the earth, in the seas and deserts, in money and people! Is this correct or not? Correct. Correct. For this reason, the hadith came:
He does not let his mind wander with them لا يحدث بهما نفسه
. In fact, some people, when they want to plan to build a house for themselves, they do not find their heart clearer or more present except when they stand to pray. By the will of Allah, when they stand to pray, they become a complete engineer. But when they finish the prayer, the heart starts to be present for the existing work. But in the prayer, by the will of Allah, there is no harm! It is said that a man came to Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy on him), one of the four imams, and Abu Hanifa was a smart man. He said to him: O Shaykh, I forgot an important issue, and if I do not remember it, such and such will happen to me. I must remember it. He said to him: Is it important? He said: Important. He said: "Go, perform wudu', and pray two rak'ahs, and you will remember it". Where did he take this from? From the fact that when a person enters prayer, Satan brings everything possible. And from the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
When the Shaytan hears the mu'adhdhin call, he retreats, and he passes wind إن الشيطان إذا أذن المؤذن تولى وله ضراط
When the person finishes, he returns. When the adhan finishes, he returns and starts to whisper in the heart of the person. When he hears the iqamah, he flees, because Satan does not like the adhan at all. When the iqamah ends, where does he return to? To the heart of the one praying. He says: Remember such and such, remember such and such. This came in the hadith:
Think of such and such, think of such and such اذكر كذا اذكر كذا
Muwatta Malik 3:6
. So Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy on him) deduced from this hadith that Satan reminds the person of what he forgot. Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy on him) was very, very smart. A man came to him and said: O Shaykh, I divorced my wife three times if she does not speak to me before the adhan of Fajr. He said to him: Speak to your wife, and your wife is stubborn, and perhaps she does not love you much. He completed it, and she was like a piece of wood, she did not speak. He said to her: If you do not speak to me before the adhan of Fajr, you are divorced with three. This means he divorced her with a final divorce. So he repeated the words to her, but she refused. Why? Why? Because she wanted to be divorced from him, and he treated her, and she was silent, she did not speak. Fajr was approaching, and the wife was precious to him, so he went to Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy on him). He said to him: Go to so-and-so the mu'adhdhin and tell him to give the adhan. And you go to your family. So the man went to the mu'adhdhin and said: O so-and-so, the case is such and such. And the issue is serious, but give the adhan. And the adhan before Fajr for a need is not a problem. Bilal used to give the adhan before Fajr to wake the sleeper and return the one who is up. And I am in great distress and worry, save me. The mu'adhdhin, out of his emotion and good intention, went and gave the adhan, and the man was with his wife. When he gave the adhan, she said: Praise be to Allah, praise be to Allah, praise be to Allah, I am free from you now. He said: Praise be to Allah, praise be to Allah, I have tied you now. How is that? Because the mu'adhdhin gave the adhan before Fajr, and he said that this adhan of Fajr was not given for Fajr, it was given before, so this was from the tricks. If this story is true, but it was told and is not far-fetched. But I cannot be certain of its truth, but it is famous about Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy on him). And tricks, if they are used to reach an obligatory act or repel a forbidden act, they are praiseworthy. But if they are the opposite, used to drop an obligatory act or commit a forbidden act.
