The Description of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) Ablution

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner from Cairo, Muhammad Bara'i, asks Your Eminence about the correct method of performing wudu'. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified wudu' for the ummah. Return to him (peace and blessings be upon him) for the interpretation of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the anklesيَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى الصَّلاةِ فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرَافِقِ وَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ
[Al-Ma'idah: 6]. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) interpreted it, interpreting it by his actions for the Companions.
So, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up for wudu', he would wash his hands three times first, and this is recommended. Then he would begin by rinsing his mouth and inhaling water into his nose, and he would wash his face generally, from the hairline of the head to the chin in length, and from the tips of the ears in width. Then he would wash his arms including the elbows, then wipe his head including his ears, then wash his feet including the ankles. This is how he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do it. This is the description of his wudu': he would wash his hands three times first, especially when he got up from sleep, in which case it is emphasized that he must wash his hands three times before putting his hand in the vessel. Then he would begin by rinsing his mouth, inhaling water into his nose, blowing it out, and washing his face.
The obligatory amount is once; the obligatory amount is once, because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) performed wudu' once, once. Then he would wash his arms once, once, including the elbows. Then he would wipe his entire head once, including his ears, inserting his two swimming fingers into the cavities of his ears, and wiping the outer part of his ears with his thumbs. Then he would wash his feet including the ankles once. This is the obligatory part. He performed wudu' for them twice, twice, and three times, three times, so that they would know the Sunnah. So the single time is an obligation, the second time is a Sunnah, and three times is the perfection, the best of what is done. Three times, three times is the most common of his actions (peace and blessings be upon him), except for the head, which is wiped once and not repeated three times. The head is wiped once, starting from the front to the back of the head, then he returns his hands to the place where he started. This is how he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do it.
The obligatory requirement is that the elbows be included in the washing of the hands, and likewise the ankles in the feet are included in the washing of the feet. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) washed his hands, he would start with the upper arm, and when he washed his feet, he would start with the lower leg, so that by doing so, the elbows and ankles would be included.كان النبي ﷺ إذا غسل يديه؛ أشرع في العضد، وإذا غسل رجليه؛ أشرع في الساق، حتى يدخل بذلك المرفقين والكعبين
So his saying (Exalted and Majestic is He):
when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbowsإِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى الصَّلاةِ فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرَافِقِ
[Al-Ma'idah: 6] ("to") means: with the elbows. And his saying (Exalted and Majestic is He):
and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the anklesوَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ
[Al-Ma'idah: 6], its meaning is with the ankles. So the ankle is washed and the elbow is washed.
This is the description of his wudu' (peace and blessings be upon him): once, once, and twice, twice, and three times, three times. And sometimes he would wash some of the limbs twice and some three times, so the matter is broad. The obligatory part is once, once: rinse the mouth once, inhale water into the nose once, and wash the face once, covering it with the washing. Then the hands once, once. Then wipe the head with the ears once. Then wash the feet with the ankles once. This is the obligatory part.
And it is better to increase, by repeating the washing of the face, hands, and feet twice or three times. Three times is the most complete and best. As for the head, it is sufficient for him to wipe it once and not repeat it. He wipes it once with his hands, including the ears. And it is better to start with the front, then pass his hands to the back of the head, then return them to ........, while inserting his fingers into his ears and wiping the outer part of them with his fingers. Yes.
