The Meaning of His Saying: "It is He Who made the sun a shining light and the moon a light" and the General Usages of the Word "Jaa'a" (To Make)
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh :[Yunus 10:5] "Jaa'a" means "to transform." Know that the word "jaa'a" in the Arabic language comes with two meanings: the first meaning is "to create" (awjad), where "jaa'a" means "to create." The second is in the sense of "to transform" (sayyar). An example of the first is the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He: [Al-An'am 6:1] meaning He created them. The sign of the usage that means "to create" or "to bring into existence" is that it does not take more than one object. As for the usage meaning "to transform," its examples are numerous, as in this verse: [Yunus 10:5] and its sign is that it puts more than one object in the accusative case. Here, how many did it put in the accusative? Two objects: the first is "the sun," and the second is "shining light." The sun is well known; it is this great body which, when a person reflects upon it, finds that it is among the greatest signs of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. How vast are the distances between us and this body! And yet, its light and heat reach the earth. In the days of summer, the earth almost bursts with heat. Even if all the generators and energies of the earth were gathered in one place, their heat would not reach far, but only a limited area. As for this sun which Allah, Mighty and Majestic, created, its heat reaches the earth, and between it and the earth are years that none knows except Allah, Mighty and Majestic. And His saying: "Shining light" is light with heat. The light of the sun includes these two things: the first is light, and the second is heat. So, how much savings does the rising of the sun bring to creation regarding the consumption of light? If we assume that this house has five hundred light bulbs, and then the sun rises, what happens to all these bulbs? They are turned off, and a great deal is saved. Similarly, if we assume that this house consumes a lot of energy in the winter days to heat the house, then when the sun rises, a great deal of this consumption is saved. So, "shining light"—I say: "shining light" is what? Light with heat. And this is what distinguishes the sun. As for the moon, He said: meaning He made the moon a light, but it has no heat in it. This is because the moon acquires its light from the sun; otherwise, it is dark, as He, Mighty and Majestic, said: [Al-Isra 17:12]. So it is a dark body that does not shine except for the part facing the sun. Therefore, when it is close to the sun, the shining part of it is small, and as it moves away from the sun, its light expands. When it is fully opposite the sun, it is filled with light, and that is at the time of the full moon. So the moon is light, not shining light. What do you say about the saying of Allah, the Exalted: [An-Naba 78:13] Does it refer to the moon or does it refer to the sun? Yes? To the sun. Perfect.
