Then He, the Exalted, said: [Fussilat 41:37] meaning the signs of Allah, the Exalted. The word *ayah* (sign) in language means a marker or indication. As for the signs of Allah, they are what serves as a marker of the power, strength, wisdom, knowledge, mercy, and other attributes of Allah, the Exalted. So His saying: indicates what? It indicates His power, His knowledge, His wisdom, His mercy, and other things indicated by this night and day. with its darkness, and with its light. This is among the signs of Allah; no one can do this at all. Allah, the Exalted, says: [Al-Qasas: 71]. The answer is: No god, no one brings that. [Al-Qasas: 72]. The answer is: No one. This is among the great signs of Allah indicating His power, His mercy, His knowledge, His wisdom, and His strength. While the night has covered the earth with its darkness, the dawn has removed this cover, and the world has become bright. Likewise, among His signs are the sun and the moon, and what a great sign they are! These two celestial bodies have been moving since Allah, the Exalted, created them until Allah permits their destruction. They move in a single pattern, not exceeding or surpassing it. Some scholars said: If the sun were to move from its place by the width of a single hair, people would perish from cold and liquids would freeze. If it were to descend by the width of a single hair, the earth would melt from heat. This is from the power of Allah, the Exalted. Then, this massive body has this great illumination despite the complete distance, and this great heat despite the complete distance. If you lit the strongest fire in the world, its heat would not reach a distance of what? What do you estimate? One hundred meters, and yet you only feel the touch of the heat, not that it reaches this degree. And between you and it is what no one knows except Allah, the Exalted, and yet you feel this heat. In the days of summer, some of them might say to me: Perhaps the water begins to boil from the intensity of the heat in some areas, which indicates the greatness of this sun. The moon is also great. This moon, this celestial body, this mass, illuminates with this great light from a distance. Yet it is cold; it does not warm the air or warm the earth, because it is the sign of the night. Have you seen if it were hot? Would people enjoy the night as they enjoy the day? It is absolutely impossible. But from the mercy of Allah, the Exalted, is that He made it a cold light so that the heat of the earth does not remain for twenty-four hours, and so that people can settle in their sleep, their going and coming.
